E-Wing vs Dutch Vander

By Smuggler, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can an E-Wing aquire a lock at range 0-1 if granted by Dutch's abillity? I'm guessing no as per the golden rule " If a card ability uses the word “cannot,” that effect is absolute and cannot be overridden by other effects "?

E-wings can always acquire locks at range 0, it's only range 1 they're locked out of.

I'd concur that Dutch can't override that. I think?

Ah, yes, I apparently added range 0 to the restriction in my head for some reason. The card clearly only say something about range 1. My bad on that one.

What got me thinking was the "ignore range restrictions" bit. I was thinking it could possibly be some loope hole about ignoring something and there for you don't even look at any other restrictions that would normaly apply. But the more I look at the rule about cannot the more I doubt that idea.

Card-printed "cannot", as in:

Quote

(...) You cannot acquire locks at range 1.

Always trumps a card-printed "can" or "may", as in:

Quote

(...) That ship may acquire a lock on the object you locked, ignoring range restrictions.

As per the Golden Rules of the Rules Reference.

The reason that "Dutch" works normally is that no ordinary ship is forbidden from taking a lock on a target beyond range 3 with a "cannot" clause, instead, it is only given the freedom of acquiring them within range 1-3.

On a similar note, I assume that having Bohdi in his U-Wing doesn’t bypass the E-Wing’s limitation either. Going with ‘the most limiting factor’ doctrine,
