Resistance ships for a 2.0 noob

By Diabloelmo, in X-Wing

Having taken a rather extended break from X-Wing for the last couple of years, a quick read of the new ruleset and a little egging on from a few people at my LGS has convinced me to give 2.0 a shot. However, despite the majority of my existing collection being Imperial, I've decided to instead give the Resistance a go.

Now, while the T-70 and the RZ-2 both look pretty amazing and are really the basis for my choice of faction, I've not really seen much discussion about the other half of the Resistance, the Star Fortress and the YT-1300. Has anyone gotten much use out of them?

The Starfortress can do some work, but its still a whale that will be taking damage fast. Vennie is a pretty safe option as s/he can add focus results to defense rolls. Out if them all Cat is the hardest to use and will need a second Starfortress in a build I think to work well.

The Falcon...I still don't fully know where to place it. Its dial and actions are awkward to use at times and can't be flown like a normal Falcon I think. Only one I have used is Rey with no upgrades and that has done some good.

Rey is strong, definitely. Only flown the Resistance YT-1300 once, and it was with her. Decently light on upgrades is fine, though the title, Rose, and Finn are all strong upgrades for her.

I've managed to not fly the Starfortress, hardly? But I've seen it do okay. Vennie's your best best for sure, as any Resistance ship other than a T-70 can proc his ability, so I've seen several builds for him that work pretty well.

The thing is, do you have a Falcon already? Or a Starfortress mini? Unless you're already getting the conversion kit, I don't know that I'd bother buying extra 1.0 expacs for them. T-70 + A-wing can obviously do some solid work, and are both available on their own as 2.0 expacs, so that's probably the easier route if not converting anything.

I don't, but my LGS has a fire-sale on all the 1.0 stuff which includes a few boxes of Heroes of the Resistance. I'll already need to be getting the conversion kit in any case for my existing T-70s, and the prospect of picking up a third along with a Falcon model for cheap certainly has an appeal.

Gotcha. Yeah, if you had some stuff you're already converting then go for the one HotR, definitely. One Falcon should be enough for you, and the Black One paint job is still unique to the 1e model (for now). Grab 2-5 RZ-2 A-Wings and you'll be well set with what's already out. If you want to find a Starfortress, it's not a bad investment, I wouldn't think. Should be decently cheap, and it does have some use, even if it's not as strong as the rest of the Resistance right now.

As said above, the Starfortress can do some work, but it's very clunky and will go down quick if left to its own devices... I don't use it much as it doesn't jive with my play style. As for the Falcon, the Rey/Finn/Rose combo is STRONG, but if you're trying to save some points, I've had some decent success with the Resistance Sympathizer with the Agile Gunner upgrade to get around the red rotate action. The X-Wings are SUPER versatile thanks to that weapons hardpoint, but unlike the T-65s, I rarely find a need to close the S-Foils especially if you equip them with BB Astromechs. The A-Wings... they're just FUN.

Bombing is nothing like it was in 1.0. Most of the "good" star fortress builds take a pretty good read of board state, have some tricks with Vinnie and firing arcs, and throw a ton of points into the fortress and hope your opponent chooses poorly on their engagement. Rey hasn't seen any significant success in competitive events. Chewie is probably the hidden gem of the falcons but needs 3 A wings to make him work.

The conversion kit, three t70 models and an a-wing RZ2 expansion can build a solid squad for $50.
