Damage that bypasses shields

By CDRG, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Which attacks provide damage that bypasses shields and what is the language that tells us that? Keywords? Do mine attacks bypass shields? If more than one hit survive neutralization in an Ion attack, does the second and following hits bypass remaining shields and ionize a small ship?

Hello,

The only "damage" that can by pass shield is the crit from "I'll show you the dark side" given by Kylo Ren. All other damage hit shields first.

And Seyn Marana.

The type of phrasing to look for is 'deal a damage card'.

For reference (emphasis mine), Seyn:

While you perform an attack, you may spend 1 result. If you do, deal 1 facedown damage card to the defender, then cancel your remaining results.

And ISYTDS:

When this card is assigned, if there is no faceup damage card on it, the player who assigned it searches the damage deck for 1 Pilot damage card and places it faceup on this card. Then shuffle the damage deck. When you would suffer 1 [crit] damage, you are instead dealt the faceup damage card on this card. Then, remove this card.

I think Ih ave been confusing bypassing neutralization with bypassing

Ionization "hits" are not damage

Ion torpedoes

In this case the you can spend results BEFORE neutralization causing 1 hit that does not bypass shields but the Ionization ignores them.

Proximity mines can cause up to three hits --that do or do not go through neutralization?

So in the case of Ion weapons:

I roll 3 Hits with an Ion Turret, the ship I'm attacking rolls 1 Evade, leading to 2 Hits remaining. The first Hit does 1 damage (Removing a shield if the target has shields, dealing 1 card if they don't) and then the remaining Hit does 1 Ion token. Ion Tokens do not care about shields or hull.

In the case of Proximity Mines:

When a ship overlaps (Or its maneuver overlaps) the Proximity Mine token, it suffers 1 damage (Remove a shield if it has shields, dealing 1 card if it doesn't) and then rolls 2 Attack Dice, suffering any Hits/Crits rolled (Again, these remove shields if you have shields first or deal cards if you don't)

What do you mean by neutralization, exactly?

Neutralizing results, per the rules, means cancelling hits/crits with evade results. Proximity mines results can't be neturalized as it's not an attack, so there are no defense dice being rolled; the ship simply takes the damage that is rolled on the attack dice, plus one additional damage. Ion weapons go through the neutralize results step just like any other attack, but have unique rules for the deal damage step.

If you're talking about using shields to 'neutralize' damage: any time you suffer damage, for each damage suffered, you lose a shield; if you don't have shields, you take a damage card. However, abilities which specifically deal a damage card (the aforementioned Kylo and Seyn) do not actually cause you to suffer damage; therefore shields cannot prevent this damage, and so are bypassed. Ion tokens (and other tokens you can receive from an attack, such as jam or tractor) are also not damage and also cannot be cancelled by losing shields.

Hope this helps!

Correct. Ionization and jamming not attacks per se. In my head I was thinking certain weapons impact "bypass" shields, well sort of- as ya'll explained. This helps. It also helps me understand how to better decide when I might like Ion weapons and jamming/tractor weapons (I have yet to use the last two).

I am interested in peoples experiences or opinions on when they are useful.

Thanx
