I do not understand how many actions a ship can do in a single round

By Snoek, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi,

The rulebook (and rules reference) says ‘A ship may perform one action during the Perform Action step of its activation’ and then goes on to say ‘There is no maximum limit to the number of actions a ship can perform over the course of a round’. These statements appear to contradict each other.

I am assuming that during the activation stage, a ship can only perform one of the many listed action ‘icons’ on the right of a ships card and on the right of any attached upgrade cards or can you carry out multiple actions if they are available e.g. barrel role, focus and calculate? It seems that you shouldn’t be able to do that otherwise why would you have linked actions.

I don’t understand where the other actions come in? Are these additional actions that can be carried out the ones listed in the special abilities of an upgrade card or something else that I am missing?

Thanks!

A ship can normally perform a single action during its perform actin step. Ship, pilot, and upgrade abilities can increase this, as can certain actions.

E.g. the Co-ordinate action allows another ship to perform an action. Or the TIE Interceptor (and Silencer) ship ability Autothrusters allows the ship to perform a red boost or barrel roll after any action.

Each ship can only perform each action once during a given round, i.e. a ship can only perform the Barrel Roll action once in a round, even if multiple opportunities would arise to perform it.

From your two recent questions it sounds like you would benefit from a thorough read-through of the rules reference https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/2a/57/2a57fdb2-e13f-4d58-b9db-bb082dd23dcc/swzrulesreference_v102.pdf

They do not contradict each other because The Perform Action Step is not the entire course of the round.

For example you have Colonel Jendon and Darth Vader.

Colonel Jendon has the coordinate action. He does his maneuver and during the perform action step co-ordinates as his action.

Darth Vader chooses to target lock. This is an action. Darth Vader then does his maneuver and gets to his own perform action step. He can not target lock because he has already performed that action. So the Dark Lord chooses barrel roll. This concludes Vader's perform action step. But Vader's ability allows him to spend a force token to perform an action. He does so to take a focus action. He can not perform the red barrel roll since he has already performed a barrel roll action. Vader has only had one perform action step but he performed three actions.

Thanks both. I have ready the rulebook and the rules reference but I still wasn’t clear on these points.

It is pretty easy when you get the hang of it. Understanding how to get your ships actions other times than during their "Perform Action Step" is a big part of list-building and flying. It can be complicated but seeing how you can chain a bunch of things together let's you get the most out of your list.

It is one of the reasons Vader can be powerful. If he spends the points on Supernatural Reflexes:

he then as all sorts of options for taking actions and moving around the board. If Jendon co-ordinates, The Dark Lord might again use his target lock action. Now he has the option to spend a force for his pilot ability to do a barrel roll.

Now we get to Vader's turn and he has the option to spend a force to use Supernatural Reflexes to boost. The Dark Lord then does his maneuver and gets his "normal" perform action step. Though he is running out of options since he can only do an action once per turn.

Perhaps Jendon co-ordinates Vader and Vader chooses to focus. That would allow him to do his linked barrel roll and get a stress. Now he can not use his ability because a ship can't do actions while stressed. This stress token also prevents using the Supernatural Reflexes. But Vader has chosen a Blue Maneuver. He completes his maneuver and removes the stress token. Now he gets his perform action step and a chance to spend a force for his pilot ability. Give him Afterburners and/or a Collision Detector (to prevent obstacles from letting the Dark Lord go where he chooses) for even more options.
