Turr Phennir vs. Quickdraw

By pappnase99, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Imagine Turr & QD having a face-off. QD hasn't used her charge yet. Turr shoots and inflicts shield damage on QD. Question is, what happens next? Can Turr do a barrel roll using his ability to get out of QD's arc? Or is QD revenge-firing first (because of higher initiative maybe)?

Short Answer: Turr Phenir can barrel roll first!

Explanation: Looking at the Rules Reference Guide , near the bottom left of page 5, under the heading of "Attack" (which actually begins on page 4), under step 6: Aftermath:

Quote

6. Aftermath: Abilities that trigger after an attack are resolved in the following order.

  • a. Resolve any of the defending player’s abilities that trigger “after you defend,” excluding abilities that grant a bonus attack.
  • b. Resolve any of the attacking player’s abilities that trigger “after you perform an attack,” excluding abilities that grant a bonus attack.
  • c. Resolve any of the defending player’s abilities that trigger “after you defend” that grant a bonus attack.
  • d. Resolve any of the attacking player’s abilities that trigger “after you perform an attack” that grant a bonus attack.

Looking at that list, Turr Phenir's barrel roll ability would take place on step b, allowing him to try and get out of arc before Quickdraw can respond. Quickdraw, meanwhile, would activate her ability on step c.

Aftermath section in the rules reference. Non-attack abilities take priority over attack abilities, and then player order is the priority if there are multiple of each.

Not quite! Defender acts before Attacker in the case of ties, here.

Actually, it isn't player order anymore. The defender goes first with non-attack abilities, then the attacker. Then the defender gets bonus attack abilities, then the attacker.

    • Resolve any of the defending player’s abilities that trigger “after you defend,” excluding abilities that grant a bonus attack.

Oh gat dangit.

Couldn't just be consistent, couldja

Since Quickdraw’s trigger is “After you lose a shield...”, wouldn’t it trigger in the Deal Damage subphase, before Aftermath?

No, because any Attack abilities that trigger during an attack, default to the 'After attacking' timing.

I’m having trouble finding that in the RR. I see that “after attack/defend” abilities get handled in the Aftermath subphase. Why would QD’s ability be considered after defending if the trigger is after losing a shield?

Under "Bonus Attack" on page 6:

Quote

If a card instructs a ship to perform a bonus attack, it performs an additional attack during the Aftermath step.

Thanks, wasn't aware of this list regarding the order of abilities during aftermath.

It's not common knowledge; most players assume that it follows Player Order, like it did in first edition.

I remember those dark times when the harpoon trigger had something to do with player initiative.
