Extended List: XXYA

By AceDogbert, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi! I've got an extended tournament coming up next weekend, and am pondering flying the below list. I'm a sucker for Rebel A-Wings, so I always try to work one into any list I fly.

Depending on what my opponent is flying, Biggs will either stick to Wedge or Horton to attempt to siphon off the worst of any enemy fire, Wedge will do what Wedge will do, and Arvel will fling himself like a rocket at the nearest enemy he can block or bump.

Do you think this list will work? Should I go back to the drawing board? Should I just fly Resistance instead?

RZ-1 A-wing - •Arvel Crynyd - 39
•Arvel Crynyd - Green Leader (34)
Intimidation (3)
Predator (2)

BTL-A4 Y-wing - •Horton Salm - 51
•Horton Salm - Gray Leader (37)
Expert Handling (2)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
R4 Astromech (2)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

T-65 X-wing - •Biggs Darklighter - 52
•Biggs Darklighter - Red Three (48)
R2 Astromech (4)
Servomotor S-foils (Open) (0)

T-65 X-wing - •Wedge Antilles - 55
•Wedge Antilles - Red Two (52)
Swarm Tactics (3)
Servomotor S-foils (Open) (0)

Total: 197/200

I like Arvel and Horton. It feels like they should work well together. A double tap, with rerolls and 1 less defense dice should be pretty brutal. Wedge is always good. The only thing I feel is missing is Leia. And/or something to coordinate. I think the list would be a lot stronger if you had Leia riding in a U-wing. Tactical officer as well.

Seems like a decent enough list. Some hitting, some protection, some disruption. Arvel seems like a cool ship to mix into an Ion-based squad. If you know where an opponent is going to land, it'll be a lot easier to get a nice block in.

If I had a nitpick, it's that I don't always love spending on both R4 and Expert Handling on a Y-Wing. If you have white barrel rolls, having a bigger blue-move selection is less important. Having red barrel rolls doesn't matter as much if you've got all the 2-speed blues. I could totally see moving those 2 points around somewhere.

Maybe just bid, but with Biggs you probably won't be too unpredictable early. Maybe R4 on Wedge, to help him recover from stress. Maybe R2 on Wedge, depending on how you fly. Keeping guns on with K-Turns is good. A strategy of disengage/regen into reengage is probably not bad, but less direct and immediate. I can see the different strategies working better for different players.

Of course, R4 on Dutch is fine, too. What I might call redundant, someone else might call consistent, and consistency is also good.

Thank you both for the feedback; I had time to think some more about the list, and have decided to drop Biggs for a U-Wing, giving me the following:

BTL-A4 Y-wing - •Horton Salm - 49
•Horton Salm - Gray Leader (37)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
R4 Astromech (2)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

T-65 X-wing - •Wedge Antilles - 55
•Wedge Antilles - Red Two (52)
Swarm Tactics (3)
Servomotor S-foils (Open) (0)

UT-60D U-wing - •Magva Yarro - 54
•Magva Yarro - Cavern Angels Spotter (50)
Tactical Officer (2)
•Leia Organa (2)
Pivot Wing (Open) (0)

RZ-1 A-wing - •Arvel Crynyd - 39
•Arvel Crynyd - Green Leader (34)
Intimidation (3)
Predator (2)

The approach is largely the same; Arvel flings himself at something, while Horton, Wedge and Magva move up as a group.

Nice. U-Wings are pretty sweet these days. After YEARS of X-Wing, Leia is finally a great card in the game.

With Leia in the list, I'd probably go with Expert Handling over R4. R4 is better for clearing stress after a K-Turn, but Leia will ideally be used on the round you want to K-Turn, so you wouldn't be stressed in the first place. And without Expert Handling, you'll be in an odd spot if you ever do want to barrel roll, since you'll be stressed on turn you might want to use Leia to pull an otherwise red move. You'll still be able to do it, but I just think there's a better synergy between two forms of stress prevention than there is between a mix of stress prevention and stress elimination.

I would suggest Saw over Magva. His ability is far more potent

Report from the front!

The X-U-Y-A list was pretty successful in its maiden tournament, going 3-1 and placing me 3rd out of a field of 15. What brought me down was a final round match against Soontir, Whisper and Vermeil (is that how it is spelt), which was incredibly close in the end (Soontir and Vermeil dead, Whisper on half points).
