Another where to start thread.

By Eyegor, in X-Wing

I've been around since Wave 7, 1st. Ed., try to stay current, and theory craft quite a bit. Unfortunately I only rarely put ships on the table. Due to this I have a VERY limited collection of 1 red and 2 blue Core Sets.

Now that I have time to start playing a little more; what do I do with 2nd Ed.?

My instinct is to shelve my old stuff and start anew. Doesn't seem like the conversion sets would be worth it.

Any thoughts? And is any specific faction "easier" for a guy who likes to fly low initiative scrubs, but not necessarily swarms. Thanks again from this veteran novice.

Yeah, you are probably best off starting fresh with 2.0.

Theoretically, every faction can put low initiative pilots on the table. Right now, Rebels have the best lists for it, but that's the sort of thing that changes over time.

You're most likely best off picking whichever faction you think is coolest, because FFG will change all the points every six months so whatever is good / bad now, might become bad / good by summertime. But coolness is forever, or something.

One thing you could try doing is look for folks selling elements of a conversion kit.

With two blue core sets, you have 4x FO tie fighters. Assuming you want to fly First Order - The FO conversion kit is $30 Msrp, less online. Upsilon class from 1.0 (Hyperspace legal too) is like $12 on Amazon now. Can add tie SF and silencers from 1.0 packs on sale or buying from players who don’t need them.

It may not be worth it, but it’s close...

If you already have 2 T-70s and 4 FOs, a Resistance or First order conversion kit wouldn’t be a terrible buy at $30. You’re still getting a ton of upgrades in those as well. Then 2 A-wings or a maybe a TIE/sf or Upsilon and you’d have the components for a decent starting list.

This.

Honestly, to anyone that ever starts this game, this is always my answer.

Okay, first off? Pick a faction you like. If that faction ISN'T in the core set, grab an ebay "essentials" pack (seriously, very cool idea people are doing and they're listed at decent prices). Now, go hog wild buying the ships you want. As stated above, since you have some FO and Resistance ships, it wouldn't hurt to at least get the FO conversion kit (if you go Resistance... get those flappy wing X-Wings... they're fun!)

Or, be like a select few... the dedicated... the deranged... and buy everything.

First thing is to figure out how much you want to spend and how fast you want/can spend it.

Then figure out what faction or factions you want to fly.

If you want to fly either or both of the upcoming new factions just go 2nd Ed.

If you want to fly the others you can

A: Just get 2nd Edition stuff. -- Most convenient. Clearest cost to acquire things you want to fly. Going to be a slight disadvantage in extended format.

B: Get a conversion kit(s) or parts broken out from a conversion kit and a 1st Edition collection or expansions. Most 1E stuff is on sale at the moment and there are always collections on eBay and elsewhere. With your two Blue 1st Ed. cores this isn't necessarily a bad choice but those core set ships are usually the most difficult to find parts broken out of a conversion kit for. -- Will take lots of shopping.

Lots of good advice here, but I would just add: if you like flying low initiative scrubs, I’d look into the Separatists?

They definitely have a load of options, and their faction identity might as well be “low initiative”

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I’m reconsidering picking up a conversion kit(s) now. I’m still learning about the Seperatists but they might be a little TOO smarmy. Both my budget and brain power shy away from 6-8 ship list. I think 4 is my magic number. Maybe 5.

I hadn’t seen the aftermarket “essentials “ kits folks are offering. They look pretty good. Great idea.

Still a lot to consider but maybe XXX or Faux all stars will fly again. Thanks again. Hopefully we’ll fly together.
