Anyone going to Celebration? (Exclusive Sculpt)

I don't think you read all the way to the end of my post. The first part was just demonstrating that the Con exclusive Vader does actually have a gameplay impact. The last two are my point. It also is not at all like Bobas flying stand since there is only one sculpt of Boba Fett. The rules that govern his usage applies to everyone because everyone's Boba Fett is the same. As I have said, its not that the new sculpt offers any advantages, for me it doesn't. Its that FFG is willing to start to release Con exclusive sculpts that have gameplay effects. <-This is what bothers me about it.

Except people have been putting miniatures on scenic bases since the day the game came out.

We literally had the same conversation with our disappointed daughter (2nd grade) yesterday when a few of her friends won a drawing at school yesterday when she didn't win. "Do you remember how you felt earlier in the year when you won a drawing? How do you think your friends feel now? I know you are disappointed, but aren't you glad for them that they can feel how you did before?"

Great lesson for a lot of 2nd graders... and some other people.

It's a pretty minor gameplay effect, just to say the other figure is bigger/smaller for cover purposes. In the grand scheme of wargames. Having legal use of multiple poses of identical things is pretty common. Any benefit gained from him seeing over things is lost by being seen.

but this isn't the place for that.

Except that you just did. That's like saying "With all due respect" before saying something that can only be taken as an insult.

I’m all for exclusive models, they make them that more meaningful.

i don’t think I will get to attend the event. I would like to hear they are going to have it at Gen Con, I’m going there.

its the luck of the draw...will of the force.

FFG announced this using the same general format and method as they would any other new product announcement, except that this isn't a new product.

That, and announcing it after the tickets to the event sold out, is the problem if any. Which I don't think is a problem, but, that's the only argument I can understand. My list of personal reasons for not being annoyed by the announcement is long.

  • It's a resin model, I don't collect resin models.
  • Exclusive con giveaways are the industry norm, the cultural norm, and several other norms.
  • It's Vader, I don't think he even belongs in a 30ish person per side wargame.
  • I actually truly do prefer the "simpler" pose from the core box.
  • Buying this model from a scalper is probably cheaper than going to Celebration.
  • It's just a toy and people are starving, wrongfully imprisoned, getting blown up in wars, and dying of easily preventable diseases.
  • Our compulsion to mass produce new styles of things for no good reason all the time is driving whole species extinct.
  • Given the last two items, if I got upset about everything that was potentially upsetting as this Vader, I'd literally die young from the stress.
  • It's a thing, acting like we love it will lead to unhappiness: things can't love you back, and unrequited love is very painful.
  • The lack of a price tag in the article makes me suspicious that they'll overcharge for it.

I don't think economic or political opinions play into this.

I agree. It’s less a politics issue and more a “first world problems” issue. People find reasons to be upset and complain when the real reasons to be upset aren’t there - everyone who plays this game has all their needs met (let’s be honest - if you needed something you probably aren’t spending income on plastic toys).

Because the truth is, it's FUN to complain!

Not having this figure doesn't change my experience with this game that I love. I'm looking forward to seeing that Scarif board and hope that it is an indicator of some upcoming Shoretroopers and K2-SO.

Congrats on the solid parenting, but I'm not sure how your story is relevant to the current discussion. I'm happy for the people who "are winning" by already having tickets to the event. At the same time, I'm annoyed that FFG didn't bother telling anyone that they needed to buy tickets until after the tickets were sold out. Had your daughter been told that she wasn't allowed to submit a drawing for consideration because she didn't submit it the day before she was told about the contest... then sure, I'd see the relevance. I'm assuming that's not what happened. I'm also assuming that you'd be a little salty with the school (as some of us are a little salty with FFG).

Also, maybe try a different approach to getting your point across. Implying that a number of us haven't learned the lessons that your 2nd grader is learning is a little insulting. I like to think my emotional maturity is at least at a 4th grade level!

EDIT - Apologies if this comes off as antagonistic. It's not meant to be. I just think you missed the mark and using anecdotes about what your little kid is learning can feel very condescending.

So, how long after this gets into the public's hands will somebody start selling knockoffs? Will it take that long for somebody to recreate something on a 3D printer?

Listen, I'm bummed mostly because the announcement came after most tickets for the event are sold out. But I am not that freaked out about the existence of it since it's not really changing anything game wise.

This thread is full of tears

Exactly, it's an acknowledgment of the rules, and an admission that what is about to be said/has already been said is breaking them. Completely underhanded, and definitely a further insult to whom the comment is directed at. Pretty sure that's the exact point of either phrase.

No that's not actually the point of the phrase "with all due respect". There's a lot of ways that can be used correctly. For example if someone just died and I'm put in the awkward position of pointing out to their family that the deceased messed something up badly, I might preface it with that.

And "I'd love to... but I won't." can be used correctly by including a less information than you did. As in "I'd love to compare this to certain unnamed political movements but I won't." That would leave it unclear what your political leanings are and not insult people of one stripe or another.

I'm happy for those who can get their hands on the exclusive Vader but I'm on the side of this is not a good move and is gonna bring more losses than benefits. For example, completionists dont have a reason anymore to buy everything since they cannot complete the collection anyway.

Wow, just wow! I can’t believe the hate from both sides on this thread.

1. I am a modeler and I love this game for the miniatures.

2. I will probably never get to play this game due to my personal time limits and other responsibilities.

3. There are so many different aspects to miniatures gaming. Some like to play and some like to collect....

4. I do plan on one day painting all my miniatures and making a nice diorama with them.

5. Just because someone one would like to have a certain rare sculpt does not mean that they are in it for the money or that they are scalpers. Some people love the artistic side of miniature modeling.

7. I totally get the exclusive release thing, and I’m happy for the fortunate ones that will be able to get one.

8. I don’t think most people are mad at Fantasy Flight about this exclusive release just disappointed at a missed opportunity to get a cool and awesome sculpt.

9. People that collect Miniatures help support the game also. If it wasn’t for this aspect you would only need one sculpt per squad class, which would make for a visually boring squad build.

10. The Vader sculpt has brought out the dark side in all of us. Soon we will have unlimited access to all sculpts

and we will finally have peace and order to this thread!!!

Oh and if Fantasy Flight would like to hit me up with an exclusive sculpt feel free to contact me! 🤓

Because one of the most important lessons I'm trying to learn is that I can enjoy things without owning things.

I mean, unless you wish to starve to death there’s just about nothing anyone in existence can enjoy without owning ‘some thing’ (ie food, shelter, clothing). Even enjoying the great outdoors requires basic needs to be met first.

Its a little myopic to claim this isn’t anything but an irritation to anyone who isn’t getting it, or didn’t already have a ticket in hand, given that it’s basically an advertising version of “Neener neener neener, you can’t have one!”

But it's why someone might be excited about sculpts they can't own.

Replace "things" with "fun trinkets and luxuries" in that sentence if you want it to remove all doubt. I think you knew what I meant though.

Anyone else remember when the only Disney park exclusives were things no one wanted? Those were the days! But we were so starved for SW merch we didn't care. Pretty much all Star Wars merchandise being lawfully produced at the time could be fit in that tiny gift shop. There honestly wasn't much being made at all. Tough times for fans.

Still, the Star Tours gift shop was the best stocked Star Wars RPG and miniatures store anywhere, and I owe the parks a lot cause of that!

While I almost started another thread for this question, I really did not want to see "another" thread on the main page about this issue so I'll pose this question here:

Would people feel the same if it was a Trooper expansion rather than a Commander?

Personally, I initially thought, "Meh, it's just Vader. The one I have is perfectly fine and actually a nice looking mini".

Then the other night I was ruminating on this matter and thought, "What if it was an alternate sculpt Stormtrooper or Rebel Trooper expansion?" and I started to see how some people could be upset. Now, I'm still not of the opinion that this a bad move on FFGs part but the thought of an expansion of Rebel troopers with some different poses and alien members that I might not be able to get my hands on did give me reason to pause.

Ah, well when you put it that way?

Of course, I’m sure those crying foul on the backlash perfectly understand how being excluded from things only creates ire, no matter what the topic, that’s a core part of human nature: wanting to be included.

Actually, I'd go from "Meh, it's cool and all, but I don't' care about Vader" to "Hells yeah, FFG does listen to us!" and simply be excited about them releasing alternative sculpts. I'd also probably try to score one on Ebay, whereas now I have no real interest in doing so with Vader.
