Triple B-Wings vs Kylo and the First Order.

By Mark Caliber, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Let's see if I can remember the details. The opposition is actually a team that I've faced before so I wasn't too unfamiliar with the build nor capabilities.

I was flying my triple B-Wing Build, same as last week: Braylen, Ten, and a Blade Squad vet all flying identical B-Wings: Outmaneuver, Fire Control Systems, Jamming Beam, Tractor Beam, Adv Proton Torpedoes, Shield Upgrade.

The Opposition was Kylo Ren in his TIE Silencer, "Midnight" in his TIE fo, and "Quickdraw" in the TIE sf.

Quote of the night (by my opponent): "Outmaneuver on a B-Wing? If I can't avoid Outmaneuver on a B-Wing I deserve to lose!"

Ranking: I walked in ranked 4th place out of 8 and my opponent was ranked 3rd place. I had 1 win and 2 losses and the opponent had 2 wins for the month (Unk loss rate).

TL DR: (spoiler) a pretty close fight but the B-Wings prevailed.

Setup: We changed up the setup and we had a string of tight large obstacles forming a line from MY lower left corner to the opponents lower left corner. Pretty much a diagonal of difficult to navigate asteroids. A literally asteroid belt.

I had lower pilot skills so I set up a tight inverted triangle of 3 B-Wings set to run up the left edge of the board. My opponent set up his team in a loose column on the opposite side, set up to approach down my right side. (A nice mirror image).

Opening Moves.

I dialed in 1 starboard turns for my three B-Wings, setting up to merge with the opponent head on and to avoid being flanked. The FO team approached slowly and tightened his formation.

I burned off the stress from turn one and raced in to clear an asteroid that defined the lower edge of the belt and to prepare to enter the open triangle on my right side of the board. Opponent set up his formation in a tight row with impressive accuracy. (Shifting from column to row formation in two turns. An obviously well practiced and well planned maneuver).

The Merge.

The B-Wings turned to hit the enemy formation and led the attack in case they turned to meet or raced to the far edge. Braylen had fallen back in the formation and he raced straight forward to catch up and take the front right side of the formation, putting Ten in the back slot.

The FO team turned into the Merge, but in a lose formation. "Midnight" stayed in the back, hiding behind a rock, while Kylo & "Quickdraw" flew in with good separation, possibly trying to set up flanking attacks.

First shots were engaged at long range with the B-Wings doing light damage (three shield hits among three targets) and Blade Veteran took a beating losing his five shields. (Not a good start).

The B-Wings closed slowly, grabbing target locks and Braylen swung in on the right flank and the B-Wings formed a nice line formation.

Blade Veteran continued to take a beating, but miraculously survived.

I tried a combo tractor attack to sap Kylo's awesome defense then followed up with a primary weapon attack, but to poor effect. Blade Veteran took a final parting shot at "Quick Draw," continuing to try to whittle down the opposition and I got another hit in.

The Cauldron

The rest of the fight stayed in the lower right side of the board and turned into a chaotic dogfight.

Blade Vet tried to disengage but died quickly (and predictably).

I got to use Outmaneuver on three occasions and spent a lot of time performing 1 Talon Rolls to keep opponents engaged. Ten Numb's ability to use stress as focus is nice and Braylen's ability to re-roll two dice when stressed also helped deliver damage at critical points.

Braylen and Ten both got to shoot their Protons and wrecked their respective opponents. One of which hit Kylo and tore him down to 1 hull left. We spent a couple of turns trying to finish off Kylo and Kylo eventually got stuck in the lower corner of the board. Kylo proved to be an elusive opponent, but the two B-Wings were persistent and took him out.

My opponent meanwhile was focusing on Ten and tore past his shields and inflicted hull damage (and one crit. Sorry I don't remember which crit). After Kylo fell Midnight and Ten continued to dogfight with Midnight denying Ten modified attacks (too good effect). And it took a turn for Braylen to re-engage and double team Midnight.

With Kylo taken out the B-Wings simply out gunned the two remaining TIE Fighters. It didn't help that the FO player separated his TIE's and couldn't engage together. IIRC there may have been a point in this engagement where one of my B-Wings tractored a TIE, pointing him at an asteroid and forced the TIE to evade the rock, away from the cauldron.

Ten was chewed up badly at the end of the engagement and Braylen was undamaged. End score was 129 vs 200, a pretty close fight.

In the end my opponent (who lost) came in 2nd place for the month, and I held onto 4th place . . . So the FO Team had had a GREAT MoV this month while my B-Wings struggled and lost big when they lost. (The guy who started in 2nd place had a miserable fight vs the 1st place player in a Ghost vs Ghost fight, and fell to third place. The third place player beat me, this month by 1 MoV point). <_<

This was a fun team to run this month, but I don't think it's going to go on to be a champion winning team. (pft. Like I'm going to tournament level play anytime soon. ) But I know my B-Wing now.

The Quote of the night turned out to be rather prescient. with the 2 K turn and the 1 Talon Roll, B-Wings are pretty capable of sticking close to their opponents.

One other observation from this month. During the cauldron it's common for one of the opponents to fall in close behind a B-Wing. Against fast flying ships (like TIE Fighters) the B-Wing with the 1 maneuver and a barrel roll, that B-Wing can lock up and force a collision with the trailing opponent, pinning that opponent and denying that opponent from an attack. That allows you to swing in with a teammate to flank or engage the trapped opfor. And to avoid that trap, that fast flying ship has little option but to zoom in front of the B-Wing that is pinning them. :o I found this to be an effective tactic this month, and helped me secure my two victories.
