CR90s as far as the eye can see....

By RedDogReb, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

My son and I play and he has thought of a list which he is convinced would be ok (certainly fun?) but I'm not so sure.

Essentially, its 6 CR90s, each with TRC, Chart officer and cluster bombs. The admiral would General Cracken so attacks were obstructed at speed 3 or more.

That list would be 374 points so he'd also have either a large bid or room for some squadrons.

I only play imperials, but 12 red dice with TRC is potentially a concern especially when they are zipping around at speed 3+.

That said, how likely is they are able to focus all 12 red dice on one ship (although 6 could be bad enough)?

A CR90 could be destroyed in one shot from some of the Imperial ships, it would just be a case of getting them in arc.

It feels to me a bit like they are glass cannons.

What would your views be on a 6 x CR90a list?

It can be a good fleet. Change one chart officer into Jiana's Light. Same effect but lasts all game and you also benefit when shooting.

I would ditch the cluster bombs. If you come up against bomber or Sloane lists by the time the Cluster damage mounts up you will have lost ships. They will still be happy to throw a damaged TIE-B at you and trade away 9 points for a CR90 kill. It also frees up another 30 points and chart officers could free up more. CR90s are fast and nimble so when navigating it's easy to avoid obstacles. Better to take a fighter screen of Tycho, Shara and A-wings or some YT2400s.

Whichever CR90 has the commander on board, a set of engine techs or RBDs could help it survive better.

Cracken is a good commander but won't help you against bombers. Mon Mothma would and gets you good benefits at medium range if you miscalculate. Rieekan has good potential too enabling you to block big ships for a while whilst you concentrate to get a kill. Double ramming with ETs and RBDs can also be fun especially against expensive enemy MC30s.

Another option is to go for 4 TRC90s and a single big hitting ACM, OE, Admonition. This gives you the clout to kill large targets quickly after they have been softened up by TRC fire. Throw in some fighters and maybe a slicer tool Quantum storm to disrupt large carriers.

A buddy of mine loves his CR90 swarm (even though he always whines about having 7 of 'em when he doesn't use 'em all in a list).
If flown well, they're a nuisance to play against, bc as you said, the amount of TRC enhanced damage sums up pretty quick and burns through evades. His favorite list is 6TRC90s + engine techs, while the flaggship has Madine and Jaina's Light. They dart around all over the place and can adjust speed and yaw perfectly to get in position or, when needed to, apply 2 ramming damage.

Cluster bombs on the other hand...well... imho they suck... 5 points for 1 time use and no possibility to control the roll just isn't worth it. Chart officer is nice, but he will probably want to get rid of them, once he played the list a bit and has asapted to how the CR90 moves in formation and/or at higher speeds. Removing both hes only 1 point shy of ETs per ship and he still has his bid to dig into.

Squadrons....well... CR90s aren't made to support squads, so they'd have to take care of themselves. Having the bid to go first will probably gain more advantage.

Had to reread cracken....thx MadCat :D

I ran a list simular to this, but without 7 CR90s. I just now changed it, getting rid of the 2 nebulons for 2 MC30s, to pack a bit more of a punch.

Ackbar can also be excellent with TRC CR's as you can get 4 Red from the side arc with a CF dial. It makes maneuvers easier and kills opponents in death by a thousand cuts.

Flown well, it will drive your opponent crazy.

If you put Engine Techs on each CR, you can then close for a double ram finisher (but that is a bit cheesey) 🙂
