Scratch built HWK290 in 1/270 scale

By player3355173, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I get a lot of inspiration from this site, so thought I’d share one of my latest creations.

It’s my HWK290 light freighter, done to the scale it “should be.” Or done to the same scale as the majority of the other X-wing ships (1/270)... if you use the measurements from the Wookipedia site. It’s entirely scratch built from old sprues, plasticard sheeting and bits from by bits box.

I’ve seen lots of debate about whether the HWK290 is a heavy fighter or light freighter. I think of them like a Mini car- new or old, they’re both Minis but one is way bigger than the other!

Mine is definitely a light freighter. I think of it as a more upscale version of Han’s Millennium Falcon; for the more discerning traveler... A limousine, rather than a shuttle bus!

Comments welcome.

Enjoy and happy gaming!

Cheers Declan Mabu, I just need to work out some modified rules that will do it justice...

I would have liked to see the HWK at the correct scale. Its such a cool ship that I think isnt done right due to the constraints of the youth of the game.

It is at the correct scale in the game.

The Wookieepedia value for the HWK-290 is wrong. The WotC Sourcebook that first tried to suggest that size is wrong.

The X-wing model is scaled based on stats that were given to FFG by LFL. Stats that match the relative size you can see in the cutscenes in Jedi Knight, the series that created the ship. And if you look at the Wookieepedia article for the Moldy Crow, you'll see it uses the correct length of 16m.

Just to hammer home that Wookieepedia is unreliable, the 16m length for the Moldy Crow has the same source cited for it as the 29m length on the HWK-290 article. And in both cases, that source is a dead link.

I like the larger scale, it looks good - more of a freighter than a fighter.

Compared against the height of the player in Star Wars: Dark Forces I do believe that the HWK-290 is correctly scaled in X-Wing as is. That being said this is a made up ship, in a made up universe, from an MS-DOS video game released in 1995...so whatever scale makes you happy is arguably correct. :P

Okay, cool. So the X-Wing is the size of a Boeing 747 now. After all, it's a made up ship in a made up universe from a model in a schlocky sci-fi movie released in 1977, and an absolutely giant X-Wing would make me happy.

If that's all the criteria we need, I declare it so.

What about a pre-rendered cutscene using FMV footage of real actors from a CD game released in 1997 ? Does that meet your standards for a reliable source? For reference, that's the same year LFL inserted CG models of X-Wings into the live action footage of the ANH Special Edition.

What about another one?

Or a third?

I'm not trying to be an *** about this, but I think it's pretty clear the people who designed the ship didn't want it to be a Millennium Falcon type big freighter and wanted it to be a smaller, sleeker ship. It's super consistent between Dark Forces and Jedi Knight in terms of in game models, and super consistent with the cutscene model in JK, which itself is consistently scaled in 3 differently composed shots.

No disrespect to @player3355173 and sorry if this is derailing your thread.

That scratch build is cool, and looks very well done. Nothing against doing whatever sort of custom you like. I'm not crazy about the boxier wings myself, but that's just personal opinion.

But when people start moaning that the version we already have in game is somehow wrong, I can't let that go without passing comment. One of the things that actually first attracted me to this game was the ability to own a physical model of one of my favourite Star Wars ships, and one correctly scaled at that.

You are incorrect.

Wholly.

You...

You don't have any idea just how much we have in common. I literally got into X-Wing BECAUSE I could have an HWK-290 model that was not only gorgeously recreated- and accurately so, but was at the proper scale in relation to the other miniatures. It's sitting on my highest shelf right now, and I wanted it since I was a small, small boy. FFG gave me both validation and the model I wanted in one fell swoop. For that they forever have a customer for their product.

You, you are correct.

It is...

It is extremely nice to see somebody citing the proper material and doing it so on point, as I have in the past. I don't feel so alone in having to do this anymore. Good stuff, dude. I dunno' what you think of me, but I consider you a friend.

Oh, wow. *That's* a trip down memory lane. Kind of a sad one. The copy I bought had a glitch, and I never made it past this one level (can't recall which). But yeah, those cut scenes. I remember those. ****.

Questions of scale aside, that's a very cool build.
