Shoot first - alternative play idea

By LTD, in Star Wars: Armada

I have been wondering recently if (particularly for larger games) it would make sense for ALL the ships to fire at the same time, and none to be removed until all the firing has been completed.

So each turn would start with the dials being revealed for each ship, Repairs, then Squadron orders being performed, then ALL ships fire, then all ships move (as usual, player one moves, then two, etc.).

Has anyone tried this in an actual game?

This would obviously affect Rieekan in particular, and I wonder if it would speed gameplay at all, or just cause headaches.

Thoughts, comments? Anyone want to experiment via Vassal one day?

I've oft contemplated this as a remedy to activation spam.

This is one of the main ideas if I ever did a rework for armada. Because there’s so much that just is weird about the gameplay

I'm not sure the games movement loans itself to every ship shoots first as to do that I think you'd also need simultaneous movement of all ships and that would create all kinds of issues.

What I do think might work is allowing you to shoot at any knuckle on your movement, even taking your shots at different knuckles.

That would be an interesting mechanic to explore and could be more 'realistic'

For simultaneous movement, you could have every ship adjust speed simultaneously (or at least secretly) and then have all ships that are moving do their speed 1, then any doing speed 2, then any doing speed 3, then speed 4. You'd only need to remember when a ship used its extra "Yaw" - maybe you put aside the dial when you used it.

This would be fiddly and painful.

Or perhaps every ship needs an X-Wing style maneuver dial. But the Corvette's dial (for example) would be absurdly complicated (five options for speed 1, for example).
