Okay, this is the third time of me flying tripple B-Wings in the local monthly tourny.
It's Braylon, Ten Numb, and a Blade Vet decked out with Fire Control Systems, Outmaneuver, Advanced Protons, Extra Shields, Jamming Beam and a Tractor; all B-Wings all day.
I was flying vs Poe in a T-70 and Ten's son (I can't recall the name) also in a T-70 and an A-Wing sporting Proton Rockets.
TL DR (Spoiler Warning! I lost decisively. It was bad. REALLY bad).
Setup:
Similar setup to last week.
Heavy asteroids on the left side with my opponent setting up the right side corners.
I had the low Pilot Skills and set up my B-Wings in a tight A-B-C formation (A Triangle shape) in the center, while my opponent set up Poe to my left, near the asteriods with the other T-70 and the A-Wing on my right.
Opening Game.
B-Wings are slow and I flew toward the center to see what my opponent had in mind and he banked in setting my team into a pincer maneuver. I opted to turn in and take out Poe First.
The Merge.
I actually set up and turned into Poe and established target locks with 2 of three B-Wings. First exchange was pretty paltry with my opponent focusing on Tien Numb to little effect. Poe got tractored onto a rock and hit by the other two B-Wings to light effect. Poe's Shields were knocked out but no internal damage scored.
Things got messy.
The B-Wing's aren't fast movers and I kept it slow, hoping to get Poe at range 1 to deliver Advanced Protorps. However, Poe with BB-8 danced out of arc and zipped past the B-Wings to avoid damage while the A-Wing and the other Numb fell onto the B-Wing's rear.
A one sided volley on Tien Numb nearly takes him off the board and the A-Wing delivered his protons to devastating effect. Tein had one hull left . . .
End Game.
It was messy. The B-Wings can be pretty 'agile' with their 2 K Turn & 1 Talon Rolls, but the T-70's and the A-Wings are FAST. The dogfight involved a lot of evasive passes by the opponent as I desperately turned and twisted in the center of the battlefield trying to get ANYTHING into arc.
I couldn't score ANYTHING on Poe as he avoided arcs, but got a couple of hits on his other T-70 to score half points. I think I shot AT the A-Wing but not enough to get on the scoreboard.
End Score was 40 to 200. That put me in 4th place out of 8.
AAR: I'm thinking that going after Poe first was a mistake. I think that if I'd turned on the other two ships (without BB-8), I probably could have delivered at least one or two protons in the Merge, where as I wasn't able to drop ANY ordinance in this fight. And against this team, I don't think the cannons were useful at all. The tractors are good against lower PS pilots where you can push them onto an asteroid and rob them of an attack. However with my opponents higher pilot skills, I'm better off just going for direct damage. Also, this opponent's locks and focuses were all spent by the time I got into combat.
Outmaneuver helps with this team and Fire Control System helped land some extra hits while keeping the specter of an Advanced Proton attack available.
Misreading Poe's reaction to the Merge was a fatal error. If I had dialed in 2 K turns for all of my ships instead, I would have wiped Poe off of the board.
Addendum: I've actually had a chance to fly this team in unofficial friendly matches and I'm not fairing well with these 3 B-Wings. Having access to a Jamming Beam is 'nice' but I've only had one instance where needing it was critical. Against lower pilot skill ships, the tractor beam can be frightfully useful, or if I have a very high agility ship, socking it with a tractor token can set up the next guy to hit more effectively. But I wonder if Ion Cannons wouldn't be a better option. My biggest issue with the B-Wings is figuring out where the opponent will land and if I can decide where the opponent will go (with the Ion Cannons) that should make delivering the Advance Proton Torpedo easier.
Heavy Laser Cannon's are probably useless on B-Wings as they're too easy to outmaneuver, with the B-Wing Pilot's low pilot skills.
For a single B-Wing deployment Ten Numb is very useful with his ability to spend stress as a focus token. You don't always get to spend it, but if you can effectively add stress while setting up that Advanced Proton shot, there is a better than average chance that you roll at least 1 focus with 5 dice.
Alright, next week is my last week with this team and I'm hoping I can pull of a victory, but it's going to be a challenge. This team isn't the most effective.
