Useless Magos Paragon Talents?

By revak, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Hi there,

I am wondering if I'm overlooking something in the Magos Career, specifically in the Paragon talents within.

A Magos gets the Gravitic Levitation talent for 500 XP. If the character purchases the individual talents Maglev Grace and Maglev Trancendance, he pays 400 XP and gets a free upgrade to Gravitic Levitation.

Oh, and he doesn't have to wait until Rank 14(!) to get it...

By the same token, the Peer (Adeptus Mechanicus) talent, he can purchase at Rank 9 for 500 XP can be picked up by a Rank 2 Tech-Priest for 100 XP.

Those 'irregularities' are the ones standing out to me without even deeper investigation...

Did I miss anything? Why would those talents be even listed in the Magos Ascendant career?

Puzzled... revak

They aren't useless if you have taken a background package or alternate level that removes them or a prerequisite for them from your career path.

Well, if I recall correctly all the canon alternate careers for Tech-Priests require rank 4 at minimum. So at least in the case of the Peer (AdMech) the Level 9 one really seems to be redundant. *Shrug* Just take it from Level 2 for 100XP and be happy.

While it's true that the published Tech-Priest stuff is all rank 4, that doesn't mean that the GM can't come up with something. Most of the Dark Heresy stuff is very friendly towards supporting home brew stuff and providing redundancies just in case a play found themselves unable to purchase something earlier due to what ever the GM may have had for them.

Like the Peer talent. That you actually get for FREE when you become a Magos, however, that doesn't mean that the GM can't come up with their own shift into Magos that doesn't include Peer, which is why you can buy it at the first Magos rank.

get it at lvl 1 get it for free at magos lvl 9 for a +10 boost and another +10 boost hwen you buy it as magos lvl 9...

or is the rule for taking a skill multiple times and getting cumulative +10 boni ruled out with the errata?

IIRC, You can only get a +10 or a +20 in a skill when it's listed at +10 or +20. The cumalitive +10, to my knowledge, only appeared in Rogue Trader in regaurds to the Life Path at character generation and, as such, dose not apply here. Further, that only applies to Skills and not Talents ... which happens to be what this thread is discussing, talents. ;-)

To the OP: just go with the cheeper option in all casses, it'd save you some headache. The Megaliv talents could have both been replaced by alt ranks making aquiring both of them 500 xp (it could happenm if he took Secutor at 5 and Heretek Savant at 7...). The Peer Talent... that really just sounds like it came from the same source that heaped a lot of Good Reputation tallents on the Magos which he couldn't meet the prereqs for untill the hasty web suplement corrected the oversight. Some things in the book really seem a bit rushed.

even if using alternative ranks just get it for 150xp (100 xp plus 50 xp because you missed it by taking an alternative rank as described on page 53 in the IH

I meant the Skill Mastery paragraph in the core book on page 96 ... It states that you get a +10/+20 and the paragraph begins with "Sometimes you will have the opportunity to aquire the same skill more then once."

but as I checked the errata it states:

The Skill Mastery paragraph on page 96 should read:
"Sometimes you will have the opportunity to acquire Skill Mastery
with a skill you already have, which represents additional training
and experience to build upon normal skills. Skill Mastery is
represented on the Career Rank Advance Schemes as the base
skill with a +10 or +20 bonus. The base skill must be acquired
fi rst, then the +10 version, then the +20. As it is possible to buy
advances from previous ranks, if you miss a base skill which is
offered at Skill Mastery level on a later rank, you can still acquire
the base skill from the lower ranks advances in order to then take
the Skill Mastery."

so clearly it dosn't work as I suggested.

but you can take it for 150xp even if you missed it by taking an alternative career path so it indeed is somehow missplaced with 500xp

IF your GM allows it. I wouldn't presume to be allowed any Elite Advance.

If one of my players asked I would say: No! Pay for it through your current level for 500xp.

250 each. Their base cost is 200 +50 for buying it from a replaced rank ;-)
