Gun Kata Specialization (Reskinning Gunslinger)

By Kilcannon, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

One of my players want to play a character that uses Gun Kata (John Wick or Equilibrium). I was thinking of just reskinning Gunslinger's talent tree for Gun's Blazing and Spitfire allowing them to lower the difficulty for two weapon fighting with gun and knife and then eventually being able to hit multiple targets.

Anything else anyone recommends for changes? Figured He would have to pair up the specialization with a melee specialization like Martial Artist, Marauder, or Infiltrator, and possibly a specialization that helps both like Assassin.

One thing to bear in mind is that the system tries to do it's best to avoid "one-stop shopping" with regards to getting everything a player might want in a single specialization. Far more often than not, such efforts are overpowering at best and downright broken at worst.

Equilibrium focused more on two pistols far more than pistol-and-melee (don't think he even did that, but it's been years since I've watched the movie), so Gunslinger works fine as is, once you account for the protagonist being highly capable (Agility 4, Ranged [Light] 5) so the extra die penalty for firing into melee against minion groups isn't going to hamper him all that much. Maybe he picked up some Marauder for the enhanced durability in combat and frightening prowess with melee weapons.

John Wick really isn't flashy gun kata, but instead is more a combination of Assassin and either Martial Artist or Marauder with a high degree of skill in both small arms and unarmed combat, combined with the sort of pragmatism that gun kata flaunts.

Agreed. My first instinct was to combine Gunslinger and Martial Artist, but Assassin would be a great enhancement to either (or both).

Try sharpshooter (aor core book), you get 2 deadly accuracy, put one in ranged light and one in the weapon of your choice, you could start with ataru striker using a phase knife to be able to use agility on both ranged and melee fighting.

Also don't forget this is a narrative system and the character are heroes and already better than normal people so just follow the RAW and describe what you are doing as Gun Kata, no need to HR anything.

As mentioned above, the real way to get such a character is to take two specialization trees. One that buffs pistols/ranged in general and one that buffs melee. You could even start both trees at the same time, or close to each other.

What about giving us a custom 30xp talent?

His could be suffer x stain to avoid the increase when two weapon fighting with different skills.

Or something like this...

Frenzied Fire

Once per session when out numbered, flip a destiny point and take a frenzied fire incidental, ignore the penalty for dual weapon fighting
