Ex-Stormtrooper Character Concept

By FossMaNo1, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So, I had an idea for an encounter for my group wherein a local "sheriff" -- a Rodian named Dabah Ool -- has placed a bounty on a "bandit" named Tate None. This bandit has been attacking the local mining interests. In actuality, Dabah Ool is the owner of the mining consortium and has subjected the populace of a local town, pressing them into service in the mine. Tate None showed up one day out of the blue, kicked the consortium out of town, and has been defending the town ever since. Below is Tate None:

Quote

TATE NONE (NEMESIS)
The Force is strong in the galaxy, even if the Empire has done its best to eradicate its practitioners from the galaxy. Still, the Force appears in who it chooses, be that person a peasant, scoundrel… or Stormtrooper.

T8N1 was just like any other Stormtrooper cadet, strong, healthy, and willing to serve. But then the training accident occurred, wiping out his entire platoon, leaving him as the only survivor. His superiors had all kinds of questions for him as he lay in his hospital bed, the entire right side of his face irrevocably scared, his right arm replaced with a cybernetic one. And along with the questions came insight from a source he did not recognize, but one he began dreading. He could hear things, intuit things before they happened. This sense was the reason he was the only survivor, the reason he pulled back as the rest of his platoon marched forward.

The Force was something all Stormtroopers knew of, if not in much detail. There were standing orders to kill any Jedi on sight. T8N1 began suspecting that the Force had come alive in him… and so he ran.

A deserter has no honor and no home. T8N1 changed his name to Tate None and fled to the outer rim where he was taken in by a small mining town. When a local warlord began oppressing the town, Tate None brought his training to bear and defended the people, inadvertently creating a reputation for himself as a hero.

The Rodian warlord, Dabah Ool, has a placed a standing bounty of 10,000 credits on Tate’s head. So far, none have been able to collect.

Stats: Brawn 4, Agility 5, Intellect 2, Cunning 3, Willpower 3, Presence 2, Soak 5, Wound Threshhold 15, Strain Threshhold 12, Defense (Ranged 2, Melee 1)

Skills: Athletics 2, Brawl 3, Deception 2, Discipline 2, Gunnery 3, Knowledge (Core Worlds 1, Lore 1, Outer Rim 2, Underworld 1, Warfare 1), Melee 2, Perception 3, Piloting (Planetary) 2, Ranged (Light) 3, Ranged (Heavy) 4, Resilience 3, Vigilance 4
Talents: Convincing Demeaner, Dedication (Willpower), Force Rating 2, Insight, Lethal Blows 1, Natural Marksman, Point Blank 2, Sense Danger, Side Step 1, Sixth Sense, Street Smarts, Strong Arm, Toughened, True Aim, Uncanny Reactions, Uncanny Senses
Abilities: Force Power (Sense) w/Control, Duration, Strength

I will probably team Tate up with a droid and a T-15 Skyhopper.

So, a question (followed by more questions). What role do you want this character to fill in relation to the PCs?

Is he supposed to be a cool guy they will get impressed by and join in his righteous cause? Do you have a set-up planned where he won't engaged in a fight right away without a chance of giving them his side of the story?

Are there any wrinkles in his motives, or is he just a simply a selfless champion of the oppressed? Is it pure coincidence that a former minion of the human supremacist regime happens to take arms against a non-human? Is Dabah Ool and his mining consortium as bad as he seems?

To me this character seems more like a PC character concept and thus perhaps runs the risk of upstaging the PCs if he joins them as an ally, running the risk of becoming the dreaded GMPC . It does seem to me that this is a concept you think is really cool, and would like to play, and if that is the case... hold your horses. Either save the concept for when you are a player, or take a step back and consider whether it's time to kill a few darlings . For instance, as an NPC, does his stats need to be that detailed? Consider cutting a few talents that just improve skills rolls, and if needed, just improve the skills instead. It's a lot easier to keep track of. Also, is the fairly "misunderstood champion of justice" the most interesting thing to do with a force sensitive stormtrooper deserter? Maybe cut the deserter part? Maybe cut the force sensitive part? Maybe cut both? Maybe keep both, but just make him wanted for being a deserter. Keeping all of them might leave you struggling to bring all of these aspects in a meaningful, unforced way. Well, unless you're planning that this character will be a semi-permanent fixture in the group... in which I will re-iterate my warnings about GMPCs.

Interesting character and I like the "moral dilemma" inferred with this adventure seed.

Sure the PC's could go in guns blazing and he'll make a good opfor, but if they do some scouting around before hand . . .

Could be interesting.
