How to get started?

No. The second edition core only has enough dials for the ships in box.

Here’s one more thing to consider. In 1.0 there are many ships that are only really viable if you have certain fixes. Interceptors demand Autothrusters and the title from Imperial Aces. A-wings require Rebel Aces. It’s not quite as simple as picking up a single ship and being able to run it. For some ships they simply don’t work when you compare it to what came later, and so if you really want to use your X-wings and Star Vipers, will have to buy other expansions. It can be a bit of a mess.

yeah I understand that. Isnt the squadron builder there to help with that? I'm not too willing to buy a ship pack for a single card as I dont plan for any official play anyway.

We may just get the convo kit once we're used to the game, I hear that it is much more balanced and the conversion kit seems to have a lot of the ability cards that 1.0 ships were missing in their pack.

ITs a bit more complex than that.

So the squadron builder is only X-wing 2.0. And so the reality is that the official apps won’t work with 1.0 ships. The pricing and changes can have severe effects. You wouldn’t want to use 2.0 pricing and upgrades on a 1.0 Defender for example. It would be horrible! Meanwhile using a 1.0 Punishing One at 2.0 equivalent prices? Ewww…

As far as conversion kit completeness, yes. The change means that a lot of the upgrades and fixes have been implemented directly on the ship. The way of balancing means that the need for specific upgrades to specific ships is greatly mitigated. There are a few exceptions, Servomotors for X-wings, pivot wing U’s, and the configurations for the Gunboat, but the all come in the box and represent abilities the ships were built with in mind. They’re simply extensions of the base ship.

And a lot of the changes to the game negate the need for the upgrade combos. Gone is Push the Limit, Veteran Instincts, and old Engine Upgrade. They have either been excised, or built into the core game. The reality is that we know better what the game is now, as many of the changes were introduced over time. Boost wasn’t even in the game when it came out!

I would strongly suggest looking for someone selling a faction lot then. You’ll get a bunch of 1.0 stuff and ships. And that way you can convert it later. I personally maintain the game is better at even the casual level in 2.0, but if you’re not interested in jumping yet, look for someone selling off a faction and buy in.

I hope that all makes sense.

Honestly the best reason to get 2.0 over 1.0 is that it's a better game.

However, 1.0 is cheaper, so it's probably up to you to see how much having the better game is worth to you.

I'd recommend (if possible) heading over to your game store on a night they have x-wing in action, and seeing if someone is friendly enough to show you the ropes. There will probably be someone there who played both editions and can show you which bits are new/better in 2.0.

X-wing players are 9/10 times a lovely bunch :D

I get that it is objectively a better game and I will probably transition to 2.0 but I would rather enjoy the variety of awesome models in 1.0 before.

thanks everyone for explaining and being helpful! 😁

If you know for an absolute fact that X-Wing is only ever going to be a kitchen table game and you're never going to join the larger community ever, and ALSO that you are never going to have any interest in playing with Prequel ships, I would say just go with whatever's cheaper or more accessible. For people that aren't interested in competitive balance and just treating this like a board game, the bulk of the improvements from 1.0 to 2.0 were "quality of life" changes that don't affect gameplay that much and actually a big change to the game (no printed points/slots) arguably hurt the game for "out of the box" play for people that don't like to be limited by quick builds but also don't like to build lists while the game's not out on the table.

People forget that X-Wing was a strong game built on a strong foundation. 2.0 was needed not because X-Wing 1.0 was fundamentally broken, it was needed to fix all the terrible decisions and balancing oversights that the 2nd wave of designers brought into the game in the years after its release.

My advice is this:

  1. Have a look at the contents of the conversion kits. You can read what they contain on the official site. There is a list of how many ships and which types they convert to 2.0.
    Don't buy the kits yet.
  2. Go buy all those models you like from 1.0 expansions. They are probably cheaper and it will take years for them to be released for 2.0.
Have a blast playing with them with the 1.0 rules.
However don't hoard more models than the conversion kits will allow you to convert!
  3. Eventually you will realize that in 1.0 some ships just don't work as well as others. Some need fixes. Some are overpowered. Most missiles and torpedoes are useless, except one. Most turrets are useless, except one. Etc.
If you are still interested on the game and would like to see many of these problems addressed then move on to the final step.
  4. Get the 2.0 core. Get the conversion kits.
Now you have all the models you wanted to have, cheaper than if you bought them individually in 2.0. Earlier. And with better rules and balance.

This is what I was going to suggest until someone pointed out that we don't know what the availability of the conversion kits will be in the future. It would not be surprising if the conversion kits dry up and are very difficult to find or no longer available in, say, a year from now.

So if you decide to go this route, keep a close eye on the available stock and prices of conversion kits and be prepared to buy in to them sooner than later. You don't want to invest a bunch of money in buying 1.0 ships and then get screwed later by not being able to convert them to 2.0 due to lack of availability of the kits.

This is actually exactly what I'm planning to do!

well, we got the game today (1.0 core plus one additional x-wing which turned out to be useless for now bc of balance but it was 50% off so..) and so far we really enjoy it!

I know my over-excitement in these things well enough to say I'm probably going to have the conv kit in a couple of weeks. For example I have every card set in Star Wars LCG 2 times minimum, which consumed a couple hundred euros. It's not my fault FFG drops the best (and pretty much only) star wars content these days!

thanks for your insight!

Great! Welcome to the game!

Just a reminder- since you got the 1.0 core set, when you decide to make the jump to 2.0 you will need to get the a 2.0 core set as well.

I have not bought into 2.0 yet, but got to play my first 2.0 game on Monday with my brother, @Parakitor . The X-Wing feels like a completely different ship to fly, and using Luke's Force tokens was a blast! I was very impressed with the game. We played an escalation game with quickbuild cards and that made squad-building easy and thematic. I'm a fan. Now I'm trying to resist buying into yet another expandable game for which I have no local players.

Okay, DON'T give up on the X-Wing! If you can find it, grab the Saw's Renegade expansion! First off, a LOT of fixes for the X-Wing AND U-Wing plus new pilots for both, PLUS PLUS it comes with content and dials for 2.0... oh, also cool paint job U-Wing and X-wing with the 2.0 flappy wings! (with... REALLY varied quality control on those, so... don't base the 2.0 X-Wings off it... the classic colored X-Wings are MUCH MUCH better).

so one copy of the 2.0 core, got it.
I saw people recommend the blue starter kit from 1.0, is that one worth getting or should I stick with 2.0 exlusively as long as I dont want to invest into a conversion kit?
Also, let's say I wanted the "most wanted" (no pun intended) expansion kit from 1.0, which comes with 3 ships, would that be useless to me without the conv kit or is it somewhat compatible?

we are also both very interested in the larger corvette style ships (once we're into the game and still feel the same), I guess those would also need the conv kit.

One more question out of curiosity: is it possible to use any ship with any faction? As people appearently used "hijacked" tie fighters as the rebels etc.

Well right now everything from 1.0 has an additional expense in the form of conversion kits. If you already have a collection from 1st edition the cost for these conversion kits can be justifiable. But without one then justifying the cost is even harder as now you will have to hunt down and purchase every model represented in that conversion kit. There is no reason to buy any of the 1st edition core sets other than you want the 1st edition cards to go with them especially since all the ships in the core sets already has their own 2.0 expansion.

As for the hijacked TIE fighter that is the stolen tie from Wave 10. Now I am not certain of the tournament rulings but I assume if you have the conversion kit you could get away with using any TIE/ln model. If that isn't the case then it shouldn't be something that a little paint can't fix. As long as the base and pilot cards match the faction and the model matches the ship represented it should be good. Again this has come up with the YT-1300.

@Shizuya , I forgot to mention that you can use the 1.0 version of the online squad-builder app known as "Yet Another Squad Builder" (YASB).

https://geordanr.github.io/xwing/

Since you're playing casual and not in a tournament, you can use this to build your squads with any upgrades/modifications that are available in the 1.0 version of the game.
