Wedge + 4 Y-wings with Ion Cannons

By dzoni_dji, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Here is my new list:

Wedge + 4 Y

(52) Wedge Antilles
(0) Servomotor S-foils
(4) R2 Astromech
(3) Elusive
Points 59

(31) Gray Squadron Bomber
(4) Ion Cannon Turret
Points 35

(31) Gray Squadron Bomber
(4) Ion Cannon Turret
Points 35

(31) Gray Squadron Bomber
(4) Ion Cannon Turret

(31) Gray Squadron Bomber
(4) Ion Cannon Turret
Points 35

Total points: 199

4 Y-wings with Ion cannons can be pretty annoying, and there is a lot of hulls to go through them and destroy them. With opponents strong alpha strike maybe one can be destroyed before he shoots, but even then, there are still 3 of them to ionize and annoy the opponent. And beside all of them there is enough points in a list to fit one strong ace with high damage output - Wedge - to help destroy opponents ships while they are ionized. I haven't tried the list yet, but I am looking forward to.

What are your thoughts about this list? :)

A 5th ship can be outstanding, but if you drop a Y and put Veteran Turret gunner on all three, you can potentially shoot 7 times per round instead of 5. And there are points left for other upgrades like hull upgrade, droids, or talents if you go with Golds/Named instead of Greys.

For example...

T-65 X-wing - •Wedge Antilles - 59
•Wedge Antilles -(52)
Elusive (3)
R2 Astromech (4)
Servomotor S-foils (Open) (0)

BTL-A4 Y-wing - Gold Squadron Veteran - 45
Gold Squadron Veteran - (33)
Expert Handling (2)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

BTL-A4 Y-wing - Gold Squadron Veteran - 45
Gold Squadron Veteran - (33)
Expert Handling (2)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

BTL-A4 Y-wing - •“Dutch” Vander - 51
•“Dutch” Vander - Gold Leader (39)
Expert Handling (2)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

Total: 200/200

I would say it depends. If you're actively trying to formulate a Hyperspace list, then I would drop a Y-Wing and add R4's and Veteran Turret Gunners to the remaining Y-Wings. Otherwise Y-Wings are basically flying cows - they're big and can look scary at first glance, but are ultimately not much of a threat. Your list would look something like this:

Gray Squadron Bomber (31)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
R4 Astromech (2)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

Gray Squadron Bomber (31)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
R4 Astromech (2)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

Gray Squadron Bomber (31)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
R4 Astromech (2)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

Wedge Antilles (52)
Proton Torpedoes (12)
R3 Astromech (3)
Servomotor S-foils (0)

Total: 196

Upgrades on Wedge are to taste. You could always drop the pro-torps and run something like Trick Shot + Afterburners to give him more of an ace feel and a higher bid.

If you don't care about being Hyperspace legal and just want the fifth ship, this is my current list:

Gray Squadron Bomber (31)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

Gray Squadron Bomber (31)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

Gray Squadron Bomber (31)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

Gray Squadron Bomber (31)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

“Zeb” Orrelios (34)
Leia Organa (2)

You're a flying brick without R4's or Expert Handling, but that's 23 red dice in total at range 2, with a whopping 34 (!) red dice at range 1. Plus it's 9 shields and 27 hull to eat through. I ran it at a local tournament last Friday and won rather handily.

I ran this at a local hyperspace tournament Saturday and went 4-0. I think outmaneuver was overdoing it on Wedge, but he is scary to anybody that rolls more than one defense die, so he gets focused on, which let me Y's go to town.

Wedge Antilles (52)
Outmaneuver(6)
R3 Astromech (3)
Servomotor S-foils (0)

Gray Squadron Bomber (31)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

Gray Squadron Bomber (31)
Ion Cannon Turret (4)
Veteran Turret Gunner (6)

Benthic Twotubes(47)

Pivot Wing(0)

Leia Organa(2)

Perceptivecopilot(8)

Points - 200/200

Here's the thing about a non-gunner Ion Grey: it's probably the best-cheapest ship Rebels have in Hyperspace. There aren't Z-95s or A-Wings, so the Y-Wing is the cheapest platform. A naked Y-Wing is probably not worth it. Dorsal Turret isn't going to be enough without VTG. So if Rebels want a ship under 39 points worth flying, it'll be the Ion Grey.

That said, the offense level of a VTG Y-Wing is a lot more potent.

How would this work out?

  • Wedge Antillies (S-Foils) 52
  • Grey Squadorn Bomber (Ion Cannon Turret) 35
  • Grey Squadorn Bomber (Ion Cannon Turret) 35
  • Grey Squadorn Bomber (Dorsal Turret, Veteran Turret Gunner) 39
  • Grey Squadorn Bomber (Dorsal Turret, Veteran Turret Gunner) 39

So the 5-ship heart of the list is still there. By stripping Wedge of upgrades, you could swap to Dorsal/VTG Y-Wings, for a lot more short-range firepower. Using Ion can help set-up strong range-1 double-taps from the DVTG Ys.

*edit* per below, Hyperspace fail. Well, at least one Y-Wing could be VTG, if all four are ICT, or two with Thane Kyrell swapped in for Wedge.

Remember though, dorsal turrets aren't Hyperspace legal.

I would rather have luke than two of those ywings. At range 3 you are doing nothing, and against large hull lists you are maybe plinking them for 1 dmg? Take that list against a double tapping Vennie and see how those ywings hold up

You run Wedge with 3 proton torpedo Y-Wings including Dutch. Only 4 ships but some scary decisions for your opponent.

Havent actually flown it though. And you don’t get a bid so I6 people might be a problem.

Really like this setup. Here is a slight variation to it that provides slightly higher initiative and better tactical mobility for the Y-Wings:

Rebel YYUX (Gold Version) - Hyperspace Legal

Benthic Two Tubes (47)
Perceptive Copilot (8)
Pivot Wing (0)

I'd ditch that R3 on Wedge for Leia on the U, but to each their own.

So Y U need Wedge?

Leia is a surprising lynchpin. To be able to stop the U-wing, k turn the Y's, etc, and still get actions is fantastic. I actually managed to k turn a Y, barrel it into a position to block 1 ship while getting a range 1 double tap on another. I get the reasoning for barrel rolling without stress, but it's not worth it to ditch Leia.

Maybe ditch the droid on Wedge? That might serve to keep her. And you'd have a 1 point bid

Leia doesn’t make A Red barrel roll white, does she?

I don't believe so.

Thnking more, I think he meant use Leia, While K-Turn, Red Barrel Roll, and Coordinate a Focus from the U-Wing.
