Vader Swarm

By Kristof_Andries2, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi,

going to my first hyperspace tournament and I want to fly Vader with some Ties.

TIE/ln Fighter - Academy Pilot - 23
Academy Pilot - (23)

TIE/ln Fighter - Academy Pilot - 23
Academy Pilot - (23)

TIE Advanced x1 - •Darth Vader - 67
•Darth Vader - Black Leader (65)
Fire-Control System (2)

TIE/ln Fighter - •“Howlrunner” - 43
•“Howlrunner” - Obsidian Leader (40)
Swarm Tactics (3)

TIE/ln Fighter - •“Mauler” Mithel - 32
•“Mauler” Mithel - Black Two (32)

Total: 188/200

Have some room left for upgrades , but I'm wondering if winning the bid is more beneficial so I can check the opponents movements first.

Advice welcome :)

A bid would be good, but I think you can squeeze a bit more out of those TIEs:

Vader (FCS)

Howlie

Iden

2 x Academies

Iden grants an extra life to Howlie, which is super important in the initial turns. Offense is roughly equivalent. The big should be sufficient against all but the superest of super aces. If you wanted, you could even add Hate on Vader. I would

I'd run Hate/Afterburners on Vader, but Iden/Howl/2 Academies. Everyone has their own favorite flavor of Vader, but a Howl/Iden miniswarm seems like it'd be a solid chunk of a list.

Depending on what upgrade cards you have access to, I might also look at the following:

Vader (65)

Black Squadron Ace w\(Ruthless or Crack Shot) (27) x5

Total - 200

With the above, you have six ships, and don't have to fly any of them in formation.

You could also downgrade to Stele, add a few upgrades to him, and upgrade a couple of the Black Squadron Aces to named pilots.

And still have the five non-Advanced pilots with Ruthless or Crack Shot.

thanks for the comments , I have some stuff to think about :)

For an example, Stele w/Marksmanship, Afterburners and Collision Detector is 59 points. Five Black Squadron w/(Ruthless or Crack Shot) are 135 points. That leaves you a six point bid, or you can upgrade one or two of the TIEs to named pilots.

Maarek really wants a coordinating ship nearby. If swarm ace is your flavour, I'd swap mailer for scourge and give him a swarm tac as well so your entire list fires at 5 or better.

Hate is REALLY good on Vader. An absolute steal at 3 points...

I will test following list this weekend :

5 ties also looks interesting but I only own 4.

TIE/ln Fighter - •“Scourge” Skutu - 35
•“Scourge” Skutu - Seasoned Veteran (32)
Swarm Tactics (3)

TIE/ln Fighter - Academy Pilot - 23
Academy Pilot - (23)

TIE/ln Fighter - Academy Pilot - 23
Academy Pilot - (23)

TIE Advanced x1 - •Darth Vader - 70
•Darth Vader - Black Leader (65)
Fire-Control System (2)
Hate (3)

TIE/ln Fighter - •“Howlrunner” - 43
•“Howlrunner” - Obsidian Leader (40)
Swarm Tactics (3)

Total: 194/200

  • Maarek Stele
    • Ruthless
    • Fire Control System
    • Afterburners
  • Valen Rudor
    • Squad Leader
  • Black Squadron Ace x 4
    • Ruthless

Gives you a nice 'mass' of TIE fighters, all high enough initiative to get the drop on most generics, but with the same initiative so you can chop and change movement order of the swarm as you see fit, and Rudor's co-ordinate can either be used to give Maarek focus/lock when engaging or to hand a reactive evade to whichever TIE fighter is getting whomped on by the opening shot. Ruthless is just as cheap as Marksmanship but Maarek doesn't really need to generate multiple criticals; Advanced Targeting Computer will guarantee you a minimum of one if you hit at all, and Ruthless makes that more likely.

Had a test run with below:

Game went ok but I felt Vader could use some afterburners; I could add it to end at 200 points BUT
I'm thinking of taking out Hate so get a change for a small bid advantage of 3 points, Vader did not get shot all game so it felt unnecessary , while the afterburners
might have been useful in some turns to get Vader in position.

I also did not get to use Scourge 's ability to get the bullseye arcs, so also thinking of getting Mauler back in.

So is a small bit worth it and is Mauler better then Scourge?

Iden is a must. She cancels a big proton torp shot completely out, or a big green dice whiff. So vital in a Tie Swarm.

I just played against a Vader mini swarm that won a local tourney going 4-0. Build out was this:

Darth Vader (65)
Fire-Control System (2)

“Howlrunner” (40)

Iden Versio (40)

“Wampa” (30)

Academy Pilot (23)

Pretty tough little swarm. Wampa takes aggro off Howlrunner or else he is getting in close for some 3/4 dice shots and Iden keeps that swarm alive from torpedo alphas.

I'm going to play hyperspace tournament this Sunday with this:

Darth Vader (65)
Hate (3)
Fire-Control System (2)
Afterburners (6)

Ship total: 76 Half Points: 38 Threshold: 3

"Scourge" Skutu (32)
Crack Shot (1)

Ship total: 33 Half Points: 17 Threshold: 2

"Mauler" Mithel (32)

That looks strong - 4 crack-shots will hit hard if you can fly the swarm to line them up properly. I think though, with 4 TIEs, you might want to consider Iden or Howl to get the most out of the block (hit harder or live longer).
