The SSD?

By JediPartisan, in Star Wars: Armada

Just got an email from Miniature Market for my pre-order of the SSD. They've changed their release date to April - June. Who knows if they got an update from FFG or if they just gave up on Q1 themselves...

I think another site posted a similar update?

I wonder if FFG pushed it out, or they both use the same distributor that is losing confidence in FFG, or they just decided to hedge their bets because: well, FFG.

Earlier today; FFG Twitter response to a query about the SSD being delayed:

Quote

No worries for you [about preorders]... Look for preview articles coming your way soon for the SSD. :)

Typically vague; could mean that we're getting a preview article later this week (or next week), with the release shortly after. Or could mean that we're getting a preview article in the next couple of weeks along with an official statement about it being delayed.

Or given how "soon" the "Something Big" turned up, could be we get a preview article in time for Worlds 2020.

The SSD stands upon the edge of a knife . Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true.

There is only one US distributor now.

Pretty sure only Australia has multiple distributors.

FFG: "Hey armada players we have this new rule set for you guys to play the SSD.

Armada Players: Cool! but when is the SSD being released?

FFG: *waves hand* "move along"

Do they not do "On the Boat" anymore? X-Wing 2nd Ed Wave II isn't even listed on upcoming.

The Upcoming page has been bereft of true updates for over a year now.

At least FFG is consistent

So much for better communication...

Only one department promised that.

FFG: Organized Play.

They put out an article for IA today.

That IS better communication.

As They Promised.

If memory serves I recall their twitter team acknowledging that their comms needed improvement. Which I donโ€™t think is unreasonable to assume covers their comms across all their games.

Spoke with the Asmodee team at New York ToyFair, they are hoping the SSD will be at Star Wars Celebration Chicago in April, but are not 100%. They have some new Legion expansions as well.

April 1st release date confirmed?

I'm sure at one point they were also hoping that the SSD would be released by Christmas, but were not 100%. Hopes don't mean much.

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts, though, that they Legion Expansions are out before the SSD drops... :D

So my cake day is soon and I'm hoping that an intern is responsible for the updates and is doing a horrible job. I'll get a call on my cake day and it will be at the store for me to pick up. Plus some kool pre-order swag. ๐Ÿคž

Oh and the store will get in an odd shipment of fighter I packs. ๐Ÿ˜œ

perhaps they don't want to have it released in time for worlds so it doesn't skew all of their data.

I think they really have to announce another wave before the ssd gets released. Otherwise so many people will hold off buying it because of the fear that 'this is it' that it will become a self fulfilling prophecy.

I think this is true.

I have no plans to buy the SSD for exactly this reason, it's been over a year since any content at all has been released for Armada and unless we get some serious commitment from FFG to release more stuff for Armada this year then I don't see any reason to change my mind. The SSD is a hugely expensive model for a game that I get to play maybe 6 times a year and without a promise of further development in the line it's just not justifiable to me.

To change the subject a bit, I wonder how the original delay of the SSD affected the overall release schedule for Armada. By "original delay", I mean back in Wave 5. Based on the SWM20 code, I'll bet it was intended to be released alongside the Pelta (SWM21) and the Squadron II packs. Besides the sequence of the numbers in the product codes, it would have meant that both factions would have received access to Fleet Commands in the same wave. Instead, the Imperial faction got the Arquitens.

How would the release schedule have been altered by this? This was in the midst of the rise of the Rebel Aces meta. The Arquitens was just food for Rebel Aces/Yavaris. But a red-die flak platform with 22 hull and access to cheap squads and Rapid Launch bays? How would the development of the meta have been altered by this change in release sequence? I think it's fascinating to consider what might have been.

And if that was the original plan, to release the Pelta and SSD in the same wave, where would the Arquitens have fit? Was the Chimaera expansion just an ad hoc expansion, a decision forced on the developers by the gap left by the SSD and @JJs Juggernaut 's desire to design a Thrawn commander upgrade as his World Champ prize?
