I've been wondering, if you have two basestars in play and a crisis card deploys a third... do you toss a temporary marker onto the board to represent it or is it not possible to have more than two in play at the same time?

All the cylon components are limiting, including the basestars, so yes 2 is the limit. If you do get the expansion in the future the plastic basestars replace the cardboard ones keeping you at 2 basestars.

So if you have 2 out and a card calls for more, then no basestars. If you have one out and a card calls for 2 then the current player gets to choose which of the limited resources are placed from the possible options.

Frak, I couldn't imagine a game with up to 4 base stars on the board!
