Are Conner Nets and Proximity Mines considered obstacles?

By Kehl_Aecea, in X-Wing

Okay, hypothetical time!

I know they don't obstruct attacks, so let's say I'm flying a TIE Bomber. Early in the game I drop a proximity mine next to an asteroid. Now, let's fast forward a few rounds. The bomber flies past the proximity mine and the nearby asteroid and drops a seismic bomb. Instead of blowing up the rock, can I select the proximity mine instead?

No

That's what I figured. Thanks for the concise answer ^_^

That being said, I wonder how seismics will interact with the new strain clouds....

I understand thems be the the rules but I really wish seismic could be used to destroy mines, it feels thematic and makes seismics a tad more useful. Though it might necessitate pushing them up a point.

Provided they're classed as obstacles, they can be blown up with the normal effect. Maybe the gas is explosive or something.

The rules for the behavior of the device template are digital, so they could be changed at any time (eg, to say that they do or do not work on clouds)

True, but I'd hope not - simply on the grounds that I decide whether to include seismic charges or not in my squad, but my opponent provides half the obstacles.

Making a ruling which can remove half the viable targets for an already highly-position-specific upgrade based on your opponent's list-building decisions, which you cannot control in any way, seems like a poor choice for gameplay.

Themantically, yes it would make a cool scene to drop a bomb to detonate mines.. But not sure how that would work. If say you had 2 Y-wings flying together, one drops a proton bomb, one a cluster mine, both at the same time, if you used this rule, that would in effect, neuter the mine dropping at the same time.

They’ll be plenty useful before long. On top of Mining TIEs, Trickshot, and numerous other abilities that enjoy having asteroids around, if Vultures are remotely scary we’ll see a nice uptick in seismic attendance.

Hyenas too.

Yeah, proper ordnance firing from rocks without giving people that obstruction defense die could be pretty nasty for sure.

Well if your opponent blocks a part of the table with a mine, you could drop a seismic at some point that can remove the mine. And possibly even get a damage into your opponent, or make use of a mine you dropped with one ship but your opponent avoided.

Seems like it should work without being OP. But as it stands it's not how it actually works. I do wish we had more variety of mines though. And I think Connor nets are overpriced while prox mines underpriced.

It doesn't say but since they detonate and are removed after someone goes over them they are not considered permanent obstacles so to speak.

Now obstacles can be removed and dropped thanks to things such as seismic charges (and seismic torpedoes) as well as rigged cargo chute so I will admit the ruling between obstacle, bomb, and mine does get blurred as to what are the classifications of what.

  • Obstacles - Permanent, stick around the battle field unless something specifically interacts with obstacles to remove them (huge ship, seismic charge)
  • Mines - Semi-permanent, after triggering they are removed
  • Bombs - non-permanent, tend to detonate on the turn they are placed
