Some questions

By Dentifrice, in Mansions of Madness

Hi,

I have the base game and was wondering what I should do next. Should I buy DLC or expansions ? I'm very interested in Street of arkham but it's seems impossible to find here.

Then there is Horrific journeys which looks very good too but the last scenario (Hidden depth) with the traitor doesn't seem to appeal my group.

So, the questions :

1- DLC or expansions first ? If expansions, which one ?

2- Can you play Hidden depths scenario (horrific journeys) WITHOUT the traitor thing

3- Do the tiles and monsters of expansions are used in base/DLC scenarios ?

thanks

Hi Dentifrice,

Glad you are enjoying mansions and this is all down to personal perference.

1. Get DLC if money is concern since expansions can be expensive ( I'm from Canada so big Box expansion such as Arkham and Horrific are about $70). Generally Streets of Arkham is regarded as the best expansions since it has a mixture of great invesigators, mechanics will can help the player and fanastic scenarios.

If you enjoy Mansions for the thematic setting, I personally believe that the Beyond the Threshold expansions offers the best scenarios, followed by Horrific Journey, Streets of Arkham, then Santcum of Twilight.

On the other hand if you are a "power gamer" and you are concerned about making the most optimal play for success ( choosing the best investigators, items mechanics or cards to help in your battle with Cthulhu), then the expansions order is Streets of Arkham, Santcum of Twilight, Horrific Journey , then Beyond the Threshold.

2. You can House rule not using the traitor mechanic if you wish and also it does not apply to fewer than 3 investigators. Don't want to go into too much spoiler detail, but the specific scenario can be quite challenge even without a traitor.

3. Yes the tiles and monsters of expansions due appear in all of the other base/DLC scenarios . The first scenarios "Cycle of Eternity" has may map variants depending on which expansions added.

thanks you very much !

I'm in Canada too and Streets of Arkham seems impossible to find...

I'm thinking about Horrific journeys because I'm thematic guy and the scenarios seems VERY fun .

But as you say, those prices are very expensive...

If you can GET HORRIFIC JOURNEYS! I recently got it at the end of January and it has been a blast to play with friends. I played the scenario hidden depths with my girlfriend and brother and it was awesome to not trust anyone (since someone might or could be a deep one hybrid from the agenda cards). I just ordered Beyond the Threshold, Sanctum of Twilight, and Streets of Arkham on Amazon so I cannot comment on those until Thursday. The benefit of buying a bigger expansion like Streets of Arkham and Horrific Journeys is that they offer different layouts of scenarios. Cycle of Eternity started off with the titles from the ship in horrific Journeys instead of the ones from the base 2e.

The quest is to now get suppressed memories and recurring nightmares...for $100+ each since they are out of stock and being sold for that much on eBay.

Ok them, as soon as my day is over, I'm going to my FLGS to get Horric journey !!

Another question,

do the Valkyrie scenarios really worth it or I should stick to the official ones ? I don't want to play a 3 hours game only to find a bug in a community scenario which would stop me from finishing it.

I have been meaning to look at the custom scenarios myself. They seem to be active on bugs based on the github repo I looked at.

It can't hurt to try them, but I know what you mean on losing all progress in a game because of a bug. Play the official ones, and if you get bored or want something different try it.

I hope someone made a scenario that bridges all expansion tiles into one big investigation. I love 5+ hour games with food, custom one shot sounds on a pad, and rgb lighting control to set the mood. This game is great for all of it.

I just bought horrific journeys!

NICE let us know how you like it. You'll like the formless spawn!

Most of the bugs are for people looking for ways to create and work with the available tools, as well as make suggestion for improvements or changes to the platform. They have very little to do with the currently produced scenarios, not to mention that they were made out of love for the community to keep things fresh.

Right, I didn't mean that bugs are overly present if that's how it came off as. I meant that the devs seem to care for their creation so they are actively removing and fixing bugs.

Now wife wants to buy SANCTUM OF TWILIGHT or BEYOND THE THRESHOLD...

I really don’t know what to chose...

I just played solo (with 4 characters) the train scenario from horrific journeys, **** it’s was fun but I lost right before end. One or two more rounds and I was going to win but time was running out !

Now that I have two expansions, I’m wondering WHY is there so many clue tokens in each expansion ? I don’t understand the need for this since you rarely get more than 5 at the time and you can only be 5 players...

Instead they should add question marks tokens.

Maybe for the custom scenarios (I finally tried them out and making one).

Or if people lose a good amount it is nice to have some extras.

There's different ways to get clues. Sometimes based on the dialog tree, or particularly good test results, you get additional clues. There's one character that gets clues each time a monster is killed. They probably realized there weren't enough clue tokens in the core set and add additional. However since their policy is also to always assume the player hasn't purchased any of the other expansions, they ensure that each expansion contains all the tokens they may need when combined with the core. This does lead to considerably more tokens than you need if you have purchased all the expansions

On the other hand, the question mark tokens are a known quantity. They know how many points of interest each scenario can have at a time, so the quantity is more restricted.

Make sense !

Yes...another question for you guys !!

I think I’m gonna glue the minis to their bases so they stay in place. But my question is about the little cardboard you slide in the bases. Some of them are very thight and don’t move but some always fell out of the base. What would you recommend to keep them in place ? I’m not sure I want to glue the cardboard too...

I also glued my figures to their bases. When it comes to the cardboard tiles , the ones that are too loose and want to fall out just dab one spot of glue along the leading edge and slide it in. If you ever need to remove it it should break free if you forcibly try and slide it out. I haven’t had to test that theory and honestly can’t imagine I ever will.

I do the same. I super glue the figures to their bases, then put a small dab of glue in the corner to prevent the ID token from falling out. Has worked well so far.

Good idea! I'll glue them all like this.

So far, my storage strategy is all figures in the Horrific journeys box and everything else in the base box. I hope the bigger figs will still fit in the HJ box once glued to their base.

As a tip, when glueing the figure to the base use the peg to mount it on the base and twist the figure to your desired position then put a drop of glue to the underside where the peg is in the hole. Once it’s set hard if the cardboard tile won’t slide in because the blob of glue is too high just use a nail file to flatten it, works a treat. Because my first round of glueing figures to bases I snipped the pegs off and applied glue to their feet and it can get messy and sometimes the glue reacted with the black plastic of the base and turned a little white. Hope you’re successful.

Good advices ! Thanks ! I will give feedback
