Base rim color?

By Attackmack, in Painting

White stormtroopers, red/brownish sand/desert themed bases with a strong zenithal lighting effect.

Do I go ahead and just paint the rims black as I always do, a good neutral color that always "work" but feels somewhat dull. Or is there a better color for the matter?

I paint all my base rims in black, but if you don't wanna do that, I would paint them whatever color the top of the base is, your desert/sand color.

I also paint my base rims black, but when I don't, I try to pick a neutral brown, preferably on the darker end.

I took the easy way out and went with black :D

a dark brown could have worked but in feeling conservative about it

I went with Black for my Imperial Commanders/ Operatives. Khaki for my Rebels (tied into some of the earth tone themes).

But for all my other units, I used different colors for each unit (for Imperials something like dark-dark grey, mid grey, almost white, pale blue...) That way I can distinguish between units on the table. Does help when multiple units start bunching up-- I can more easily call out which unit is activating (or identify which units are being shot).

I do red for rebels (Mephiston Red to be exact) and blue for my imperials (50/50 mix of Prussian Blue and Dark Prussian Blue).

My Priority Supplies bases are black.

Steel Legion Drab, formerly known as Graveyard Earth. I do that universally for all models as it's earthy tone suits absolutely any ground.

For painting the sand/dirt on my bases, I use a dark undercoat followed by a heavy drybrush of a slightly lighter colour, then a light drybrush of an even lighter colour. I then typically use the "middle tone" of the colours I have used on my dirt as the edge colour as it ties in the rim to the rest of the base quite nicely.

I paint all my rebel unique/single units (ie. Luke, Han, RT-ST) with red rims, indicating they are the only unit in the group. For multi-miniature units, I paint the entire unit bases the same color. For my rebels, I have 3 sets of basic troopers, one is blue, one yellow and one green. For me it makes it easier to distinguish which minis go with which unit if they are in close proximity. I do the same for my imperial units except I use black for the unique/single units.

On the topic of differentiating units, if I have multiples of the same type of unit I put dots on the bottoms of the bases. No dots for the first, 2 for the second, 3 for the third, etc. Helps me keep the model itself "clean" and if I need to sort things out I can tip up the base and check.

For my Rebel Troopers, I used a vertical stripe, and a triangle to differentiate them, on the uniforms, and will add them to the base. So for example, I have 2 Red squads, I and V; 2 Blue squads, I and V; and my fifth squad is unpainted lol

My bases don’t even get painted. I add terrain to the top (rocks, grass, shrubbery- matches my home table), but the edges are still as packaged.

I'm going with black rims for my Imps, with a coloured squad marking.

I'm thinking to do my rebels with a rim colour similar to the molded plastic.

All single minatures - Abaddon Black to block out any wash/crud that got onto the sides.

Multiple unit minatures - Squad colour, i.e one squad is blue, another green and so forth. I always use dark/muted colours though. or atleast ranges with strong pigmentation.

I put a colored marker on each unit (stormtrooper shoulderpad for example) and then put a big blob of that color on the underside of the base.

For the rims themselves, the entire base, top and sides, get a couple coats of sand colored paint. For Legion models anyways.

Interesting topic. I actually tweaked quite a bit about this before getting started. I decided early on the factions would have different colored base rims.

When I saw the rebel fleet troopers, I knew there was going to be a "shipboard" aspect - so I didn't want to use an earth-colored rim.

I decided to use black rims for Imperial and dark gray for Rebel. When I did the vaporators and whatnot, they did get a rust rim.

NOW, droids have appeared. Though they're in factions, I nonetheless regard them as inherently neutral, and so they got Panzer Gray rims - right in between Reb & Imp.

I’m weird and put in way too much time by putting painter’s tape on the rim then removing it when I’m finished painting and basing 🤪 I like the smooth look to the bases, though.
