Greetings, I think that I am ready to take the plunge and start getting an army together. I am wondering though, how vital are the contents of the big box. The price tag is a lot for me to swallow right now. Part of the appeal for me is the tiny cost, at least compared to Warhammer.

No one will make you do anything. The cost effectiveness of the core set is so good though, that i don't see why you would do it any other way.

Where in the world are you?

You'll need dice, command cards, 3 corps units and other units to fill out an army. Compared to the price for the other units by themselves you save so much money.

Even if you just want one faction, you can sell the other remnants of the core set to by other units or commanders

Its worth it. Seen several cores for $70 on ebay and ocasionally low as $56 on amazon or ebay.

Core is on Amazon for 70 right now. I can't see you getting the contents much cheaper buying piecemeal unless you have a community to haggle with.

We have a decent group in Indiana. I can set you up with the Facebook group everyone is using currently to post events, if you wish. We just had a game day at Game Preserve in Greenwood and they have game days up at Family time Games on the north side of Indy. If cost is an issue, look for used game components. Lacking a source of used game, the best deal is the core set. Actually two core sets is still a good deal and gets you the biggest bang for the buck. But yes, even if you grab two cheap cores, you are probably looking close to a $200 buy in to have enough units to field a couple of different lists to play with. Go sell some plasma, help someone who needs it out and enjoy the game.

Two cores get you up to speed really and are still cheaper than trying to "fill out" your forces after the first box. I highly suggest keeping them on an amazon list or keep checking sites like miniature market if you're trying to save some money. The cores are worth it. You'll have double of the dice, tools, and a hefty amount of minis you could trade or sell if you only keep one faction.

From an Imperial standpoint, the core set gives you...

• Vader - $12.95 (based on other single-model Commander expansions)
• Stormtroopers - $24.95
• Stormtroopers - $24.95
• 74-Z Speeder Bikes - $24.95
• Dice Pack - $14.95
• Movement Tools & Range Ruler Pack - $14.95
• Barricades Pack - $14.95

That's $132.65 worth of retail value, assuming you throw the Rebel side in the trash. If you include the Rebel side, you're adding another $87.80. That's $220.45 in total. If you want Rebels, instead... the dollars work out the same.

What you're NOT getting if you don't get a core set are the neutral command cards and certain tokens. The tokens aren't that big of a deal and the neutral command cards can be ignored as options if you buy Priority Supplies ($24.95), buy a Specialists box ($19.95) or buy a second named Commander/Operative ($12.95). You'll also need to beg, borrow or steal a Standing Orders command card. It's ONLY available in the core box... but there are two in each box, so getting a copy from someone probably isn't too hard.

Realistically... buying the core off Amazon for $70 and then selling the models/cards for the faction you don't want for $30 or so gives you a ton of value for a net $40 or so. You may not use Vader or Luke depending on your play style, but you can always use the Corps units and the Speeder Bikes or AT-RT.

You technically can get away from the big box....but it will be more expensive to do so. It’s far cheaper to use the core set, and since you said money was your issue... better to buy once cry once rather than spend way more to get the same value.

Everyone has made great points above about the value of the Core set. One thing that may not have been emphasized enough, right now, the Core Set is the only place you can buy the four generic command cards that you will possibly want to have (the 4-pip Standing Orders Command Card is currently the ONLY 4-pip command card and is a requirement for your command card deck). Given the great value you get from the Core set in starting an army and other stuff, there is no reason to not get one.

As above, plus the core set is still the only way to get Luke and Vader...

If money is a concern, you don't need a core set, you need two! Price is not the same as VALUE, and the value of your first and second core set cannot be overstated. You need two sets of dice, that's $26 right there. You need 3 "corps" units in a legal army, and the box comes with 2 per side. So even if you only buy one core box you're immediately going to want a $25 corps unit... it adds up quickly to be, the only logical choice for the cash-strapped is to save up and get one big box, then save up and get two.

Two big boxes plus Leia or Chewbacca or someone is two (technically legal, though kinda sucky) 800 point armies for less than the cost of one Warhammer army. Even if you're sure you'll only play one, a huge number of us changed our minds and collected both after playing a few games, and you might want to loan an army to a newbie, etc. Plus you'll have a "home" for those occasional awesome models you just have to get that aren't part of your preferred faction.

The core game is sold by Fantasy Flight themselves (not some fly by night basement dweller) for $71 free shipping on Amazon. You don't have to buy it all at once. Buy a box, paint it, and play the demo game a few times, buy another one, paint it. Buy a rebel expansion, paint it, buy an imperial expansion, paint it. Slowly scale your games up to 800 points as you go then pick a side to focus on once you've played a few games as both sides.

Honestly, THREE core sets and a spare character or two per side, and then just buying the subjectively coolest models for your favorite faction, will keep you in very good shape for Legion armies. Core sets are great if you have limited funds! Save up and go with core sets you won't be disappointed.

To play the game there’s nothing better than the core box. Its value verses buying everything separate has no comparison. Can you find someone to split the cost with?

If you can't afford the Core Set, you can't really afford this game. It's the cheapest way to get into Legion by far.

As above. The Core Set is the best value for your $ you can get in the game. It gives you everything you need, and many things you cannot buy elsewhere yet, for a massive savings.

Try and find someone who wants to start Rebels and see if you can go halfsies. Buy it from an online retailer that sells at a discount and save even more.

If you get it online at a discount and split it with someone, you'll probably spend $35-40. So for the price of buying 1.5 boxes of Stormtroopers, you'll have gotten 2 units of Stormtroopers, Vader, and speeder bikes.

If you are on a budget, you really can't afford to not get the Core set.
