Expansions...

….due wee expekt expanzions fur dis gamen?...

It wouldn’t surprise me. That was my first thought as well. The layout of the board suggests it’s expadable. I could see two expansions the mid rim and the galactic core.

It also seems like it wants to have a The Mandalorian expansion.

I'm sick of this mentality. The game was announced a day ago and people are already worried about expansions? What is with this? What makes someone think they need expansions already? And the truth of it is that expansions are almost always contingent upon sales of the base game (the exception being for customizable games that require multiple expansions for the game to function the way it was designed.

Personally, I find theses one-off games to be such a breath of fresh air after Star Wars LCG, X-Wing, Imperial Assault, and Legoin. If no expansion comes out, all the better! Case in point - I don't like Rebellion's expansion because it takes a small sliver of the Galactic War and makes it take up a disproportional amount of game space (talking about Rogue One characters reltatively swamping out characters from other movies and sources).

On one hand I agree but on the other I personally think that FFG have the SW 'thing' by the balls and think $$$$$$. Arkham Horror 3 edition was the final straw 'let's chuck out ANOTHER Arkham Horror Files games. I'm sure the HPL Arkham Horror geeks/fanboysgirls/nerds (which I am) will lap it up making us loads of $$$$$$' ( no I didn't buy AH 3E)

There will no doubt be expansions - I'll be surprised if it is a One Shot but I doubt it... I can imagine a Tatooine expansion maybe as a Jabba's Palace/Bounty Hunter expansion and a Shadowport/Smuggler expansion.. dunno, but for me Enuff Znuff... I found out about this from a whatsapp photo text off a friend....

I won't buy it... I'm hunting down Eldritch Horror expansions... I'm done with SW now... happy with the RPG but i wouldn't say no to a playtest. It could be alot cheaper if it was marketed as a generic space smuggling/bounty hunter game but no... paste the Sat Wars logo somewhere and it will no doubt sell. I've seen AA and AAA batteries in the UK with the SW logo on the pack *facepalm*

Xwing to me is not a one off.... there's a SHED LOAD of extra ships - expansions - that add extra rules and then they make the initial release superfluous with the 2E with force rules.... they could have easily just released 2e as a box as with extra cards etc not the ships box... but no they also release a TFA box..

P.S.How can you delete your FFG forums account? I'm outta here!!! So long fanboys

Let me just say I agree a lot with some of the attitudes you hold. I got burned out on Star Wars and had been a Terrinoth fan for a long time. I bought into Runewars despite not being in a city with a game store because I wanted to show my support for the game. I hoped to one day be in a city with an active Runewars Miniatures Game group. Instead, FFG pulled the plug on Organized Play (thus killing the game). I was actually thinking there were no games this year I was really looking forward to and that was going to be the first time in nearly a decade. And then this game got announced. I had all but given up on FFG, but I'm going to give this game a try.

I think the game kind of is begging for expansions, really. I mean, with only 8 pilots you can be, there is a very, very good chance someone's favorite character gets left off. And as far as I know, we have no idea how many ships are in the game (at least 5 starter ships). That is definitely going to be an area where people will want expansions. Compared to Rebellion, this game seems more easily expandable.

I mean, all 6 of the ESB Bounty Hunters won't be playable characters, and that will be something that will be a fan request. The player characters and the available ships are what I am most interested in, at the moment.

Personally I don't want this game to have expansions. If it has them I'll have to pass on it. I'd like to be able to just buy the box and play the game. Besides, I already play Legion and X-Wing, I can't afford a third collectable game.

The trouble is that you need crew, too. We already know Chewbacca is crew and not a playable character. That is a gut-punch to all Chewie fans. Hondo is another crew member I believe would have made a popular main character. I have no doubt that many of the other ESB bounty hunters will end up as crew instead of playable characters. With that in mind, I don't think we know yet that this game will need expansions.

Still, they probably didn't include all 6 ESB bounty hunters in this game, just in case it sold well enough for an expansion, so an expansion would not surprise me. But I would be disappointed if they left popular characters out just so they had fodder for an expansion and then decided not to make the expansion after all.

Not saying that its needed, just that it what people will want. We still don't know all the content, but there are going to be people who want more options.

Honestly, 8 characters for a 5 player games feels bit low.

I think this game has a great potential for fan made characters. As far as I’ve seen it’s just a fun casual game for a night of playing games. If players want to play Bossk, Jango, etc. it wouldn’t be hard to make your own variant of any chosen character.

Expansions would be cool in my mind. As said above, the more inner rings would be cool. Making the game longer saying you need 10 game for anyone in the inner rings to employ you.

Game looks awesome, I’m wondering if they’ll bring back classic game night kits like early xwing where just showing up got you neat things for the game.

The irony is that 6 months ago, I would have said the same thing to my response.

I agree that I don't think this game should or will have tons of expansions. That said, I could very easily see one or two that allow for 5-6 players plus more characters and purchasable items (blasters, ships, etc.).

I'm with you on this one. Some games NEED expansions as they are expanding miniature based games. But often times true boardgames get expansions that don't really add anything, but end up obfuscating the core product. I can't believe how many games I have where the core game is more enjoyable and better balanced than the overly complicated expansion that was forced into the picture to capitalize off the initial success.

The problem is every time they release an expansion, I feel like I'm missing out if I don't get it...then I get it, try it, and decide the base game was great as it was.

It depends on the game if expansions are truely needed.

Of course every publisher would be insane NOT to produce expansions these days.

But you as the player still decides in the end (sic)...... Probably not ... as the push towards collecting it all ... is always stronger than controlling a personal buying spree.

FFG specialises in it. We are weak and ... they know it :)

I still think that the vast majority of games do not need expansions ... compared to the number of times we ACTUALLY play them on an individual basis. So apart from the usual collectable/living card games, your life will not be unfulfilled by just buying a base copy of a game you will play a few times per year...or ... in your life time.

The game seems perfectly set up for expansions: add a couple of new board tiles, some relevant jobs from those systems, extra gear, a few more ships, a few more characters, a rule for when someone wants to recruit a crew member who is already a player-character, tie it all together around a theme and there you have it. If each new expansion has just a few exclusive super-cool or useful pieces, everyone will want them...

Seems an odd choice to expand a game called Outter Rim to, ya know, not the Outter Rim. If that were the direction I think you would see it called something else.

To be fair, this is like saying 'Imperial Assault' should only ever be about fighting the Empire, and if they want to include Scum they should have called it something else. In this case the name is pretty clearly meant to invoke a feeling of the various people on the outskirts; expanding it into other areas would work thematically as long as they maintain that focus, even if the name 'didn't fit'.

Anyway, I'd say at least one expansion is almost certain, depending on who we get with the other three characters, even if it's just to 'patch' issues and add more options (so basically similar to Rise of the Empire for Rebellion). Not so sure about more than that, FFG doesn't seem to be quite as expansion happy as they used to be with these kind of games.

When I started reading the article, I was actually hoping it was about unique, player-created characters.

You don't really need an expansion for that, but official support to create your own character board with your own ambitions and stats would be my biggest request.

I was the same. I got excited about making some new nobody smuggler. Saw official crew and was like "Ehh, at least my smuggler is custom" then hit the PCs

I have thoroghly enjoyed Rebellion, and was quick to pick up Rise of The Empire when it came out. But, the group I played with hasn’t felt the need yet to open it up and incorporate it into the original game. We’ll eventually get around to it, but the original game is loads of fun even without it. It does offer those who would like the Rogue One flavor in the game toput it there, and I’m fine with that.

After watching several demos of Outer Rim, I am coming away with a few things. The map layout, while able to be randomized is suggested to be used as indicated in the setup, since the jobs have been game balanced against that configuration. To add new planet pieces in would upset that balance unless the jobs were perhaps totally replaced by ones in the new expansion. Adding other characters and ships shouldn’t be near as difficult, so perhaps those kind of expansions are more likely. I have to say, after watching a few games, there is enough randomness and dice rolling to keep the game from being repetitive, so I think we’ll be fine without any expansions for a while.

As someone who loves Firefly the Game (I know its another company-but relevant to topic) I'm really looking forward to expansions. Mostly for the expansion of different jobs, items for purchase and different characters to play. After several play throughs with the basic set you run into the same type of encounters repeatedly and it can get a little stale (not always but sometimes). Some miniatures represent either the ship or your character would be nice too (I know the other games like Armada or Imperial Assault have them).

I do think the Mandalorian is a definite expansion but would love to see one for Rebels too.
