Don't count on me to save the world

By wirbowsky, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

I have the feeling we are the worst investigators around.

We are playing the Dunwich Legacy campaign. We failed all scenarios except the House Always Win which we partially succeded.

Yesterday, we played Blood on the Altar. I was playing Rex and through unfortunate turn of events, I was forced to resign at the turn 3 of the game. It was resignation or elimination by physical damages. Two mythos phases and I was done!

Well Dunwich citizen can continue whatever they are doing, because the remaining investigators had to resign also. Don't count on us to save any one :)

The only positive thing that happened is that identified a strange solution, I have no clue what it will do but I hope that it will make my visit to Dunwich useful.

Ouch! That sounds rough indeed. This kind of rough ride could be caused by lots of things:

  • a rules misunderstanding, perhaps, like how skill tests or card commitment works
  • poor decks (the recommended starter decks, for instance, are pretty poor)
  • playing on too high difficulty (you can get really pounded if you're not braced for your difficulty level)
  • not knowing the sort of challenges your decks could face.

Do you know what sort of things are causing you the trouble? Or perhaps you don't want guidance, you just wanted to share your misfortune?

Oh I just wanted to share my misfortune. Surely my deck is not optimal and I think our first problem is that we have no guardian in our group.

In this play I was just unlucky with the mythos cards. First mythos phase, I drew an Irish mob guy which took me two actions to evade. With third action, I checked the card underneath a location discovering a nightgaunt which hit me for 1 dmg & 1 horror and dropped me in the central location. Of course there was a servant of many mouth there and I had no action left. So end of the turn, I took 2 additional damages. Second mythos phase, I drew kidnapped which hit me again for 2 damages. So I was down to one health at the end of the second mythos phase.

But the show will goes on :)

Ouch. Yeah, sometimes the mythos do not play nice. But this sort of thing happens to seekers who don't have back-up or have preparations like Mind over Matter and attack options.

I'm running a Carolyn Fern deck right now through the new expansion and am intentionally sticking close to my fighters because I did not include options in my deck to save myself. There are pros and cons of focusing heavily into one role/task. Especially in low player-count games.

As long as you are having fun, that's all that matter. :) The last time my group played this scenario (the Return to version) we got pretty badly beaten as well. We just had to take it on the chin.

I mean, easy for us to say... maybe not so much for the residents of Dunwich. 🤣

Thanks for sharing!

I have mind over matter and some other good cards. But the defeat was so quick, I had no chance to draw any of them. Also I am indebted so I start the game with only 3 resources.

But we are having fun and that's what really matters. But I think it's sure we will replay the campaign afterward.

Should just note @wirbowsky that checking under locations is a fast action, indicated with a lightning bolt symbol, so doesn't actually take up an action! But yes, you sound pretty mauled there!

Haha this game does that, go on the FB group to see all the lil posts about bad luck :P

On the note of actually finding ways to save the world, did you have friends or were you solo?

An important part of multiplayer is being there to help others, if a buddy gets into trouble everyone should try to figure if dealing with the threat for them or just releasing them from it is an appropriate plan.

In my Current Akachi + Wendy playthrough in Forgotten Age we draw our opening hands and try to figure out who's doing what, sometimes I go around getting all the clues while he supports me and clears the threats away like a babysitter, then he draws his clue tools and our roles switch since I will probably have my combat tools at that point. The advantage in both of us being able to fight and clue is that we can split up and complete different objectives, especially if one or both of us is lucky enough to get every major tool on the table.

Rex is one of those guys who doesnt have this kind of flexibility (usually), always stick with your friends when playing him
