Squad-Up Mode

By HealOverTime, in X-Wing

TL;DR

Players get "theme points" for following restrictive squad building requirements and can use them to summon extra mooks or auto-hit with their heroes. Intended to make it enjoyable to fly Red Squadron versus Inferno Squadron style games.

OVERVIEW

Offers simple, in-game benefits for building squads based on specific expanded universe units and characters. Both players should agree to this mode prior to the game.

The original thinking behind this mode was for Epic games or for dramatic recreation battles like Yavin or Tansarii Point.

I know that many pilots (especially for Scum & Villainy) never belonged to a particular unit or were part of a group not yet incorporated into X-Wing. I don’t have any rules to support the inclusion of these solo operators in this mode just yet.

REQUIREMENTS

2-8 ships with upgrades for a total of up to 200 squad points; or, a minimum of 175 squad points if included in a larger battle.

At least one single bullet limited pilot.

All pilot cards to be from one of the squadron lists below.

BENEFITS

+1 theme point per non-limited or 2+ bullet limited pilot.

+2 theme points per single bullet limited pilot.

+X theme points where X is the number of non-limited upgrades with a point cost of 1 or more identical on each pilot. i.e. if each pilot has an R4 Astromech and Ion Torpedoes then X=2, but equipping Servomotor S-Foils to each pilot will not increase X to 3.

+2 theme points per limited upgrade equipped to a single bullet limited pilot who can be shown to have flown with that upgrade in universe*. i.e. R5-D8 equipped to Jek Porkins, Virago equipped to Prince Xizor, or “Chopper” equipped to Hera Syndulla.

Theme points can be spent during the game in the following ways:

During the system phase, choose a friendly, non-limited or 2+ bullet limited ship which has been destroyed and place it within range 1 of your board edge with all shields and charges recovered and all damage cards shuffled back into the damage deck. (-1 theme point per hull and shield value of the chosen ship)

After a friendly, single bullet limited ship attacks; during the modify attack dice step you may change one dice from a blank/eyeball result to a hit result. (-1 theme point)

*If parts of the Star Wars EU contradict each other here, players should allow the theme points to be taken.

Nice idea. So you basically provide ingame benefits for sticking to squad building rules, I like that.

Do you feel the points cost is balanced? I am not sure. Why not also allow the modification for defense?

I don't get the +X explanation.

What I am missing for scum is the skull squadron. Give the fangs a little love

Technically, Black Squadron:

  • Darth Vader
  • "Mauler" Mithel
  • Valen Rudor
  • "Wampa"
  • Black Squadron Ace

I do like mechanics which encourage thematic squads.

I like this idea, but worry it might be too strong.

I like running black sun lists and Hutt Cartel lists, using the models with similar paint schemes (Kihraxz, Kimogila, Croc, Scyk or Khiraxz, Z95, Starviper)

I like the idea of non-limited pilot specific titles with a negative points cost = to the number of same squad titles in the list?

Maybe unique pilot titles would give more discount, so you don't just spam generics.

Perhaps too complex to balance.

Added Skull Squadron and Black Squadron (Empire) but I couldn't verify Valen Rudor with my Google-Fu so he has a (?) next to him for now.

As for balance, it isn't meant to be perfect but most 200pt squads should provide 5-10 theme points, let me know if you find a way to really break it for 15 or more.

for example, the following Skull Squadron list has 7 theme points:

Fenn Rau (fearless, ion torpedoes)

Joy Rekkof (fearless, ion torpedoes)

Skull Squadron Pilot (fearless, ion torpedoes)

Total squad points: 197

It gets 1 theme point for including one non-limited pilot, 4 for including two limited pilots, and 2 because each pilot has the same two non-limited upgrades.

Might expand “Spectre Squadron” to Phoenix Squadron. That would add the other Sheathipede pilots and at least the base A-Wing generic.

Neat idea. You could also do Rogue Squadron (Wedge, Luke, Ten Numb, Gavin Darklighter, Corran Horn, probably others, but not Yavin Red Squadron members). Shouldn't Talonbane Cobra be with the Tansarii Point Veteran, by his/her subtitle? I feel like there are some other Galaxies Tansarii people, but I don't know that lore (edit: maybe you got them all; that feels about right). Should the Black Squadron Scout Striker be allowed into Black Squadron? You could also let all the Strikers be a squad together, since they were all (but the Black Squad) stationed on Scarif together.
