Mixed Imperial Squad

By DarthPandamonium, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Thinking about running this squad out there. Not sure how successful it would be. I would probably fly the Ties in a pair and the interceptors in another pair. I am working on getting more ships. I think this is a good squad with what I currently have. Any tips or pointers?

TIE/ln Fighter - •“Howlrunner” - 51
•“Howlrunner” - Obsidian Leader (40)
Swarm Tactics (3)
Shield Upgrade (8)

TIE/ln Fighter - •Gideon Hask - 40
•Gideon Hask - Inferno Two (30)
Predator (2)
Shield Upgrade (8)

TIE/in Interceptor - •Turr Phennir - 65
•Turr Phennir - Ambitious Ace (44)
Outmaneuver (6)
Hull Upgrade (7)
Shield Upgrade (8)

TIE/in Interceptor - Alpha Squadron Pilot - 43
Alpha Squadron Pilot - (34)
Electronic Baffle (2)
Hull Upgrade (7)

Total: 199/200

This feels WAY too fragile.

With small ships like that, you need LOTS of them. A couple unfriendly green dice and this list is hooped

Do you have any other ships? Assuming you don't, running some of the most expensive aces will probably get you the most punch for your points. Definitely run Soontir, with Predator and whatever other upgrades. Running high-initiative aces also legitimizes not spending some of your points to form a bid, so as to give your opponent initiative and move any tied ships last. What about something like this?

Soontir Fel (52)
Predator (2)
Shield Upgrade (8)

Turr Phennir (44)
Predator (2)

“Howlrunner” (40)
Crack Shot (1)
Afterburners (6)

“Mauler” Mithel (32)
Predator (2)

If you feel that bid is too high, you could put an Afterburners on maybe Mithel as well, or whatever else you like. Actually, Hask has good firepower and is close to Mithel in price too, so he wasn't a bad choice -- Mithel just has higher initiative, which I feel is your plan with this last. Mithel could be Skutu, too -- whichever ability you think will be easiest to trigger. I put Crack Shot on Howlrunner because people might target her first, so she might only get one chance to use her elite talent, but whatever suits you (though, hmm, that contradicts my thought of keeping her alive for a bit via Afterburners. You can fiddle around!).

Thanks for the advice TheHumanHydra!

Welcome to the Empire!

If I only had two TIE/ln and two TIE/in to work with, this is what I would throw together:

“Howlrunner” (40)
Elusive (3)

Iden Versio (40)
Elusive (3)

Soontir Fel (52)
Predator (2)
Afterburners (6)

Turr Phennir (44)
Afterburners (6)

Total: 196

Proxy any upgrades you don't have, most people should be cool with it during non-tournament games.

Iden and Howlrunner are BFF's now, and help you get some value, or at least make the opponent spend more shots trying to take Howlrunner of the board. The two of them should be tight during the match buffing and protecting each other. If you survive the first pass, you should get Elusive recharged after the K-turn, alternatively, Trick Shot. I have also been having a lot of luck with flying Mauler Mithel and Scourge Skutu as a pair. If you use them, you can go Trick Shot and add Shield Upgrade to both.

Soontir and Turr are going to flank. You do not have to keep them tight together. Turr isn't going to out Initiative everyone, but should be able to dodge arcs of any low Initiative lists you might see at the table. Soontir is an excellent Ace, although flying Interceptors can be tricky for newer players (assuming you are new to the game and not just the Empire faction) since they are very fragile if not dodging arcs and knowing when you just get out instead of trying to take a shot that you shouldn't. You need to keep him alive as he's going to be your closer.

Thank you kris40k! I really appreciate the advice.

Howlrunner is absolutely not worth the points you pay if you're only running her in a pair. She's just about worth the points if you're running all four in a block, but why would you do that?

If you've got the TIEs, two ace Interceptors and a mini-swarm of 4 Academies is a fun time, albeit one that's terrified of taking crits. If you've only got three, the two Interceptors plus Del Meeko, Gideon Hask and Seyn Marana is fun because all the TIE/ln abilities integrate nicely with each other.

With only two TIEs, I'd think about Mauler or Scourge before I took Howlrunner and use any extra points as an initiative bid. The list is pretty light on red dice, so getting a bonus die is a big deal.

I'm thinking something like:

No Shields, All Guts

“Mauler” Mithel (32)
Predator (2)
Afterburners (6)

Iden Versio (40)

Soontir Fel (52)
Juke (5)
Afterburners (6)

Turr Phennir (44)
Predator (2)
Afterburners (6)
