Measuring whilst shooting

By Mcpolle, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Question came up last night, we were playing a game, and my opponent was facing the edge of the board, and had no targets in his arc, but he wanted to measure range out of his front arc, basically to find out if there was room to do a k turn.

Is this legal? Can you measure anything out of your front arc, or does there nedd to be at least something in your front arc?

Cheers

You can measure to enemy ships only.

a. Measure Range: The attacking player measures range from the attacker to any number of enemy ships and determines which enemy ships are in which of its arcs .

But it may be worth noting that a small base ship that is perpendicular to a board edge will be able to K turn 4 if it is inside the line of asteroids (a 4K on a small base is exactly the same length as range 2, plus the nubs, and the rocks have to be range 2 from the board edge), so it may not always be necessary to measure.
