Should I get another Core Set at this point?

By StrikeAce41, in Army Building

Hey all,

I have recently purchased and painted most of the Empire's units for Legion, minus the Imperial Specialists, and I'm trying to decide at this point if I want to get another core set for the 2x stormtrooper units and 1x speeder bike unit. Would my money be better spent on something else for actual game play, given we have so many more kinds of units in the game at this point?

I don't have a huge interest at the moment in playing rebels, and while I have painted the rebel troops that came with my core set for practice, I don't do well with painting skin/hair, so at this point I stick with the Empire (ie the rebel troops in another core set would sit in their unpainted glory). I realize that an additional unit of Stormtroopers is ~$20, same with Speeder Bikes, so value wise another core set makes sense if you are playing both sides or have someone to share the set with. A more general question would be, is the game evolving past having 3-4x stormtroopers units and 2 speeder bike units? The parts of my brain comparing value versus actual usage are in conflict haha.

Thanks!

The second core set is the most important purchase after your first core set. Do it.

Dice and barricades add to the value further.

There are fast easy ways to paint the extra rebels that will look great from "tabletop distance" during a game, and which will allow you to have a loaner army, and/or give a home to your favorite rebel movie hero or vehicle when it's released allowing you to suddenly play a whole new way.

Second core set: 4 thumbs up.

Remember, 3 corps is REQUIRED, so unless you need snowtroopers for some reason, then no the game is not evolved past 3+ stormtroopers. Even if "better" things than speeder bikes come out, bikes are still very effective.

When I got into the game I bought a core set and then me and my buddy split a 2nd core set, each of us taking the faction we played. That might be the most cost effective way to do it. Then you're paying ~$45 for 2 stormtrooper squads, a bike squad, extra dice and/or extra movement and range templates (depending on how you split those up).

Don't forget that FFG themselves (not some basement discounter) sells core sets for way below $90 on Amazon.

It greatly depends on many factors; only you truly know the best answer to your question.

When it comes to getting a core set for the additional imperial units or another unit either do or don't have, that depends on what army build you are aiming for. Though I'd suggest you always put priority towards what you are going to use for actual game play; then continuing adding to your collection while perhaps entertaining new army ideas with those newer additions.

If specifically you are set on getting the Stormtroopers and Speeder bike; I'd like to add a third idea. While financially it would be better to just buy or share a Core set, yet even though the individual sets will cost you more they also have upgrade cards not found in the Core set.

Stormtrooper Unit Expansion has Impact grenades in replace of Concussion grenades.

74-Z Speeder bike Expansion has Comms Jammer (x2) and Long-Range Comlink (x1), while the Core doesn't have Comms Jammer.

Hopefully that helps, or leads you in the right direction.

Find a rebel player at your FLGS and trade for their unused half of a core set. That's what I did and both of us are super happy about the decision.
