What to smuggle?

By ddbrown30, in Game Masters

I'm planning on running the Fell Star adventure from Saga Edition's Scum & Villainy. At the same time, I'm going to have a PCs favour obligation trigger such that they will be asked to smuggle something into and/or out of Point Nadir. I'm having trouble coming up with ideas on what that something should be.

The NPC to whom the favour is owed is an information broker. Any suggestions on what he might smuggle?

Edit: For anyone who doesn't know or doesn't want to look it up, Point Nadir is a shadowport located on a comet. It's controlled by the Anjilliac Hutts and its existence is a closely guarded secret. Access to the shadowport is restricted and very difficult to obtain.

Who is he buying his info from, and what might they want in exchange?

A message capsule? Because he wants to avoid the holonetwork?

A lot of Whyren's Reserve for small bribing on social events and Gifts for good customers?! Alcohol loosens the tongue...

No idea. He's currently mostly an empty shell to fill out a backstory. What do you think would be interesting?

Hmm, that could be interesting. Epsis controls the holonet on Point Nadir, so that could be an interesting route.

There would be no reason for alcohol to be restricted here. I updated my initial post to give more info about what Point Nadir is.

Something doesn't need to be restricted to be smuggled. Whoever runs the Black Market there is technically in the position to watch over what is sold and claim part of the cargo as customs. Those are criminals - rules certainly exist (otherwise there is no need to "smuggle" something inside) but they don't need to be fair.

And Whyren's Reserve is a very good Corellian Whisky with a base price of 100 credits per bottle - if I were one of the Hutts I would claim as much of such cargo as I could get away with... personal Tribute *g*

Fair enough. That said, I'm looking for something more centered around the fact that Point Nadir is generally off limits.

Actually, maybe smuggling isn't even the route I want to take here.

Could always be something dangerous to Point Nadir. Specifically, something that might give up it's location.

Maybe the infochant has been compromised and is being pushed by another faction (or possibly the Empire) to smuggle in a special transponder that will broadcast the location of Point Nadir to someone with ill intentions for it.

This would be a big problem for the Hutts if their location was compromised, and would be a believable thing for an infochant to want to send since it's valuable information he might could sell (or at least get someone off his back with).

I like that, but it doesn't quite fit with the setting as written. Point Nadir is on a known comet ( Resh 9376 ), so it's actually quite easy to find, it's simply that no one knows about it. If someone wanted to give up its location, all they would need to do is tell them the name of the comet. That said, in order to approach the shadowport safely, you do need a transponder code and you must follow a specific flight pattern on approach. Anyone who doesn't will be "politely" asked to leave.

I could definitely find a way to rework this a bit and instead of them stealing a new transponder code or registering a new ship in the database or something like that. That could create some interesting tension, especially as the PCs end up encountering and potentially working with Epsis, which is the group that would be in control of that system.

Thanks for the suggestion. :)

A specialized encrypted transmitter array the authorities on your shadowport can't track so your NPC can communicate securely with an asset at the port.

Oh, I like that too. A way to communicate with someone on Point Nadir without having to go through the main holonet connection.

Gotta smuggle and make contact with the asset on the down low....

It doesn't have to be an item, maybe a person, an Imperial Spy/ISB Agent?

Or his mistress...

It's a little round-about, but the information broker has tasked the PC to be an unsuspecting courier.

You see, the broker commissioned a thief in Point Nadir to steal an Ardos disk from a local, uppity-up Anjilliac Hutt in the shadowport. The thief was successful and was just waiting for the right time to leave Nadir when he was caught for something unrelated - some minor transgression involving the spouse of a conclusion-jumping but influential lord. Eventually things will be smoothed over, of course, but for now the thief cannot leave to take the stolen Ardos disk to the broker.

Enter the PC(s). They are in Port Nadir, or nearby (whatever your set up is), and the broker is calling in one of the favors - of many, I'm sure - the PC owes him. It's a simple courier job, really. Get the package from the thief, and bring it to its next destination. The package is more or less sealed. The thief warns them not to worry about the parcel's contents too much.

What will happen if the Hutts discover the PCs have a stolen Ardos disk? What would the PCs do if they open the package and realize what it is they have? What happens if the PCs remain in the shadowport long enough for the offended Hutt to realize the disk is missing?

How about smuggling sentient beings? Slaves, criminals, terrorists, political dissidents?

There are several Star Trek episodes where high profile personalities were smuggled across the romulan border.

Maybe because it's cold outside, but I first read the title as, "Want to snuggle?"
