Secrets on the Wind invocation range

By gareth_lazelle, in Rules Questions

The range on secrets on the wind can't be right, can it?

As written it has a range of a couple of feet? Any thoughts?

It's pretty poorly written. It seems to suggest the kami listen in on one particular position next to you, but unless I'm mistaken what it does is get the kami to listen from that position out to a number of range bands equal to your Air ring - they catch everything said in that circle.

The way I understand it, you get at the center of a room or at the center of an area where you expect important discussion to happen over the next day, and perform the invocation to station your personal spy kami. Then, you leave and for 24 hours, you can concentrate to hear what's being said in that room, from anywhere else.

Yeah, so, the spot has to be close to you, but then you hear everything around the target area equal to Air Ring for 24 hours, plus another 24 per 2 opp spent, and there's no range limit on the action to listen. What probably needs to be clarified is the 24 hours bit, is that 24 earth hours or Rokugan hours?

Are Rokugani hours explained as being 2 normal hours anywhere in 5th edition? My copy of EE is on its way, maybe there's something in there? Until it's confirmed 5th ed still uses the hour system of previous editions, I go with the normal 24 hours in a day definition of hour, simply because that's what new players will assume is correct.

Yeah, it's in a margin note in EE "Hours in Rokugan". It's not established clearly in Core though, which is why maybe it needs clarification.

It's "Drop a bug and go, the battery dies in 24 hours."
