Factions and cards question

By Robojoel, in X-Wing

HI, Just getting back into X-wing and trying to work out whats going on with factions.

-Are Rebel Alliance and Resistance (and in turn Galactic empire and First order) d different factions and you can build squads with a combination of ships?

-I see something about Seperatist alliance and the Galactic republic, are these going to be two even different factions?

-I read something about cards being distributed across factions like legion (ie you can buy one faction but still get all upgrade cards) is this true? I want ot stick with the ships I have for Rebel alliance and Galactic empire, will I miss out on upgrade cards? I bought the upgrade packs but dont want ot have to start buying new factions just to keep up with the cards 😕

Thanks in advance for advice!

First Order and Resistance are their own factions now. You can't mix them in with Rebels or Empire in anything but "house rules" games.

The Republic and Separatists ARE indeed their own unique factions as well. The game will soon have 7 factions... what a time to play, right? :D

Cards WILL be distributed across the factions, just not simultaneously. While FFG hasn't mentioned HOW they plan on this, the most likely of ways will be cards released in a First Order ship will be available in a future release down the road for each faction. However, if you REALLY want that particular upgrade RIGHT THIS SECOND, then yeah, you'll have to buy outside your faction to get it.

I'd also point out that the cards we've seen so far that are cross-faction are from the Conversion Kits, and haven't been released with any ship yet.

great cheers guys!

Assuming you got a core set, then the following cards fit this criterion:

Rebels: Barrage Rockets. K Wings can take them, but they're nto in the Rebel kit (presumably because the K Wing's slot loadout changed during development).

Imperials: BT-1 and 000 are available if Vader is in the squad, but are only in the Scum kit.

Scum: Moldy Crow is usable on Scum HWKs, but only in the Rebel kit. Techs for the Quadjumper are only in the Res and FO lines.

Everyone other than Resistance and FO: the generic Force upgrades are in these kits and nowhere else yet, and will only be in these kits and the Rep/CIS stuff when they come out, for a while. Hate, in particular, is only in the FO kit.

I don;t think I've missed anything there.

There’s also composure and agile gunner, which are exclusive to Lando’s Falcon for now. They’re not really essential, though.

I’d argue the only truly essential out-of-faction buy right now is Moldy Crow if you’re playing Scum and not Rebel. The others are nice and it’s annoying to not have them, but it’s not a big deal.

Welcome back to xwing!

If you have both the empire and rebel conversion boxes for your ships, and you never bought into scum (or don’t want to ), then that’s it. You’re golden. Unless you really want to fly the FO/Resistance ships that were in 1.0 (you can always secondary market them if you prefer to fund new purchases).

Just buy what you want from there. There’s nothing yet that’s essential to you. Maybe Hate for Vader, but that’s probably an easy enough part out card. And it will eventually be back in house for the empire anyway.

It was a marketing lie (which some people still defend, after two waves of exactly the same bull we saw in the first edition), don't ever trust FFG when an alternative to a fair model is squeezing more money out of competitive players.

That being said unless you want to participate in high level tournaments you probably don't need the upgrades, just print out a list, and even for tournaments there will most likely be people willing to lend you some cards.

It’s significantly better than where it was.

Explanation, please?

Universal cards only available for specific factions, a feature maliciously built-in even into the conversion kits to make sure it could not be excused.

Eh, we don't have any reason to believe that the Conversion Kits are anything more than a one-off. When the actual ships get released, we'll have a better idea of who has access to what.

If they couldn't even print Scum their own copy of Moldy Crow we have every reason to assume it will only get worse. And would you look at this, the new Force upgrades are sequel expansion exclusives, with near zero chance of the original factions getting them in wave 3.

"I'm sure eventually everybody will get them" could be applied perfectly well to any first edition card... wanna play autothrusters as an Imperial, sure, just wait a few years.

At least they priced Moldy Crow and basically all the good HWK pilots through the roof, so no need to worry about getting that until at least the next points update :)

It’s only fair. Rebels didn’t get Maul, Imperials didn’t get 0-0-0 or BT, Scum didn’t get Moldy.

No, it's unfair, and unfair for every faction.

Yup, The factions are separated and there is no faction mixing in any official formats. However nothing to say you can play other formats. Through use of the Custom Feature on FFG's Squadbuilder app (and a lot of head banging frustrations in getting it to work right) there is a format that allows factions to be mixed.

Right now it is set up with 5 of the 7 factions and will be updated after wave 3 is out on the squadbuilder.
