Hyperspace - is there a list better than Tripsilons?

It was much, much more possible to weather two 4 dice modified shots at range 3 in 1e, though, and the Upsilons didn't have reinforce to avoid getting burned down quickly either.

Sure. I'm just skeptical that FFG is capable of engineering the tripsilon squad to boost sales. I think, like the Jumpmaster, it's a convergence of card abilities and FFG are probably reading these threads going "Aw, ****, here we go again."

The upgrades and ships have existed in roughly the same way since 1.0: Collision Detector

Collision Detector when from a "eh, its free" card to a something people seek out and pay for with it allowing you two completely ignore obstacles for the round allowing you to charge straight onto rocks and still shoot twice, which is a huge boon to large base ships and key to this list working like it does.

Hyperspace is doing great to open up the meta. 😩

Yes, yes it is. Because now for what feels like the first time, we are having a discussion about tactics based on a list, and not the usual how to build a list based on some broken combo we have to be afraid of.

Of course we still see many falling back into those well established patterns of thought, but it's slowly changeing.

These threads feel like the threads we had over Dengaroo and Parattani and FSR and etc. Some tactics, some list building, and a lot of *******.

Concur.

I do think FFG has missed a trick in how the Limited schema works, in not intrducing SHIPS which are Limited, i.e. **Upsilon-class shuttle, or whatever. They they could make the VIP transports super cheap without making them spammable.

Unlike then, there is a non-archetype solution. Much more interesting, much better signal/noise ratio.

Here's my question. Why are cargo vessels and personnel shuttles the most heavily gunned ships in the game? 🤔

What, you've never seen all the semis on the highway with their sides bristling with miniguns and a 105mm turret on top?

Just in Australia.

Sure, but my personal irritant is the same. It completely invalidates many archetypes, and some ships. And in Hyperspace it has such limited options that for several factions the answer is… what?

And the fact is that it demands you list build for it. There are absolutely a bunch of otherwise valid or interesting lists you could bring that, due to Trips, are non viable in competitive play.

Dengaroo killed Interceptors for most of the rest of first edition. Because even though there were lists that could beat it, the odds were you would face one, and so bringing Interceptors was ceding a third of your list or more to die, probably before you even shoot.

I am more ok with this beast in Hyperspace, because most factions have something that can deal with it.

Rebels have some options, Resistance probably is the best positioned. Scum has a few choices, including Boba crew that help. Empire is faring the worst against this. And as that is my primary faction I have a particular animosity.

Ironically, one of the forums favorite dead horses, Gunboats, May be the best answer. Too bad it’s not Hyperspace legal.

Because they're bigger?

How is that hard to figure out? People always seem to make the mistake of comparing Star Wars' geopolitics/economy/arms distribution to the modern day, when in fact its way, way, way more comparable with the Age of Sail or American West.

The YT-1300 isn't an 18 wheeler, its a 12 gun schooner from the golden age of piracy.

The Upsilon is like a well armed Brig.

The rule of Star Wars ships, whether military or private, is that if you can't move fast, you put big guns on. The Upsilon has some very big guns.

To be fair, I don't know how the Ghost gets away with it. It's massive for a light freighter, but it's forward guns really aren't all that.

But I'm getting off topic...

The Ups is like the Lambda from ROTJ. It exists to move characters from scene A to scene B. I can understand giving it guns* to make it playable in a miniatures game, but 4 dice primary seems overkill to me.

*While both models have guns, we never see them fire in the films, not the Lambda at least, I don't recall the Ups ever firing either.

That's a gunship, not a cargo plane.

Clearly you have successfully blocked TLJ from your mind.

Ugliest airplane in the world, but fortunately, looks don't matter in getting the job done!

But its an example of a cargo plane converted into a gunship.

I think it’s got a special kind of beauty. The kind of beauty that only exists when you don’t give a rip about being ugly, and you own it masterfully :)

I'll beg to differ on the ugly part.

Yep. So is the Upsilon a shuttle converted to a gunship? If so, why is it primarily used for shuttling people around?

Speaking of a "Old Terroch and jump down their throat" list...

  • Old Terroch (Fearless) 59
  • Black Sun Assassin (Fearless) 51
  • Black Sun Assassin (Fearless) 51
  • Ahhav (Fearless, Afterburners) 39

If they all can get into R1 of an Upsilon, there's an 87.3% chance of at least 12 hits. Probably not *that* trash in general, but also probably not top-tables-large-tournament.

//

That's something I don't really know: how easy is it to get in the face of an Upsilon? Either to set up a R1 shot, or maybe a block. I suppose that if an opponent looks like they're going to get in your teeth, the strategy for the Upsilons might be to roll in on 1-banks?
