This takes me back. In the long long ago, Decipher's Lord of the Rings card game actually had the rule that DISCARD meant from play by default and the game would specify if it applied to anything else. ("discard from hand" "discard from deck" etc)
In a later set, this led to hilarity when the card makers apparently forgot this and put "discard" on a card without the "from hand" that it was supposed to be, leaving a deck with a board wipe that it wasn't supposed to have.
