I'm curious what imperial troops are left to show up. By my record there are:

Shore Troopers

Range Troopers

Mud Troopers

Imperial Super Commandoes (mandalorians)

Imperial Patrol Driver (biker from solo)

Fleet Trooper

ISB Agent (like Kallus)

Inqusitors (operative likely)

(various drivers and pilots from Rebels to at-at pilots) these are the least likely.

probe, sentry and kx security droids.

Did I miss any current canon troops? (Legends need not apply)

As to the Dewback.. I'm game, though, there has also been some cavalry on Jedha shown. I wouldnt mind some packs with extra options. Don't use the dewback? Use it as cover/terrain. Put two options in a box maybe even.

As to the variations of stormtrooper armour mentioned (mimban, sandtrooper, etc) I think an upgrade such as the specialist pack would do wonders to incorporate these, not that they don't look different, but the environmental gear kind of covers what they do. But adding personnel of heavy variants could be a good middle ground.

personally, I was thinking of all new sculpts for differing troops, and less subtle “reissues”. I do want to see the t-21 repeater carried by sandtroopers, so adding the backpack to that trooper could work.

I think a civilian box with tatooine, coruscant or jedha crowds that you would base as a group and some associated objective cards would be amazing!!!

You could totally build a civilian/VIP objective, and I'd love to see a box like the Priority Supplies do that. Probably mean the game designers would have to do a lot of writing though.

Default Stormtroopers *are* Sandtroopers; note the leader shoulder pauldron (cooling body glove or whatever) and DLT-19 backpack. They're wearing the same gear they do in EP. IV

What advantage does a dewback grant in battle? They seem to be pretty slow, and unarmored.

Tauntauns I can understand, they run faster than a person and they can headbutt.

The dew on their backs refracts the explosive light energy in laser blasts.

Dark Troopers are cannon. Short to mid range heavy infantry are cool. A squad of cyborg storm troopers wading through laser fire to inflict mass pain on rebel scum is cool.

Did they ride them into battle? I just figured they used dewbacks so they could avoid walking. And, like, project authority over people who aren’t cool enough to ride great big lizards.

The advantage I'd imagine for cavalry pieces would be a free move action; not quite the compulsory move of a repulsor vehicle, but the animals could keep moving even while the driver is pointing their weapon, aiming and shooting. That would be the trade off with a ground vehicle- the ground vehicles only move when you use an action, but they can and usually do carry heavier weapons. The cavalry units would be limited to the weapons carried by the rider.

Beyond that, I'd peg the dewback as speed 1, and the tauntaun (wow it would be weird to see both on the map at the same time....) at speed 2. They also MIGHT get "light transport" or whatever it is the landspeeder has that lets them move one single figure trooper unit.

I expect creatures (Mounted Troopers?) may be able to ignore difficult terrain and even some height differences, depending on the animal. They probably have a nasty melee attack, and might be pretty tough - I could even see Armor 1 keyword on big creatures like the Dewback. Or since dewback rider man has like a cattle prod, maybe charge?

(Also for some ungodly reason, games in either continuity really like giving Dewback troopers flamers)

I see Tauntauns being the rebels answer to speeder bikes and dewbacks being the empire's answer to AT-RTs.

Sandtroopers all have pauldrons and backpacks though, unlike the FFG kit.

It's comparable to the differences between the rebel trooper unit and commandos, or the 1.4FD crew and that pathfinder with the hoth gear.

If I wanted to start a flame war I'd post their stats from minis games gone by but heaven forbid Legion exist within a context. I don't think dewbacks are meant for battles per se but they are a military mount which would be caught up in, presumably, in outbreaks of violence as big as Legion "battles". Which are basically the size of glorified gang fights or cattle raids.

I think like most of SW stuff, their purpose was to look cool onscreen and it wasn't thought out in gory detail. To try to reverse engineer it into a game, I'd say they ARE faster than a person, and they let you carry a ton of gear without getting tired. Also I don't want to get bitten by one.

But the driving purpose behind miniatures games is to have a reason and a way to bring models "to life". Since they are a cool model, it is enough.

Thinking about the rules, they could be quite good if they were effective melee units, thematically a shock lance and dewback bite could be listed as melee attacks with an Arsenal 2 skill on the card to make them interesting with a ranged option which could also be used in melee to pick of a straggler as "vehicles" are never engaged, you could even build in a damage rule that the pilot is killed first at the threshold and the dewback randomly attacks units after that with the rider being a removable component.

Dewbacks should be considered quite fast, in Imperial Assault they added to the speed of the unit and Star Wars Wikia states " Dewbacks were capable of speeds as fast as 50 kilometers per hour" So it must be true

Supertrooper. They are a specialist stormtrooper unit. They are better than stormtroopers in every way. They soak up the energy from stars and shoot it through their helmet lenses.

Shootertrooper. They are a specialist stormtrooper unit entirely equipped with automatic weapons.

Gale-force-winds-and-minor-property-damage-Troopers. They are a specialist trainee stormtrooper unit.

Corridor Troopers. They are a specialist stormtrooper unit for fighting in corridors.

Room Troopers. They are a specialist stormtrooper unit with close ties to the corridor troopers who escort them to their designated battle zones.

Retcon Troopers. They are a specialist stormtrooper unit with close ties to the ISB and a higher power that dwells within a lofty towered castle. Among other tasks they will make all the previously mentioned troopers canon while deleting the existence of others.

I remember when the words 'A new type of stormtrooper: The Dark Trooper' had some kind of weight to me as an excited 13 year old. Now, in my cynicism, I just see things like specialist range troopers and shoretroopers as fairly silly. I might be getting too old for this.

It's because back then, a new type of stormtrooper was actually a new idea. Now it's like a new flavor of Mtn. Dew or Coke. They've had enough flavor variations now that the idea of another one is just, whatever.

I also find the endless stormtrooper uniform variations as silly at this point, and pretty naked excuses to sell a different action figure. To an extent that works ok in the context of a minis game cause it's fun to have different figures for different people to collect. But when you combine endless uniform variations to collect, WITH marketing through statline variations, it gets pretty ugly pretty fast IMO.

Jet Troopers haven't been mentioned.

They show up in Rebels cartoon, and other FFG games.
