Alternative to Dash, Han Roark combo

By Gallanteer, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Not tried it but has anyone tested if Kannan, Han, Dorsal and Heightened Perception is almost as good and leaves 92 points for two better ships than the HWK? Its obvious a little less versatile than firing from the YT2400 but has a much greater squad points efficiency so the pay off on paper looks to get away from the one trick pony a little.

I get your point, but I believe the whole point of the DashRoark list is that it's able to roll 10 modified dice at I7, split in two salvos. Wiping an ace completely off the board instantly or taking out two generic fillers as the grand opening of the game is where this build shines at.

Sure, we can theorycraft alternatives! But let's take a look: assuming we're not overlapping the turret arc with the primary, your build rolls... 2+2 dice at R2, 3+3 dice at R1. Nothing at all at R3. What is heavily underwhelming for something that takes up half of your list.

It'd be 4+2 R2-3, 5+3 R1 if the VCX has the turret aimed forward and gets the target in the forward arc. For fun, I decided to look at the strongest options for double tap I7 Han Gunner attacks:

Heightened Perception Dorsal Kanan Turret Arc: 2+2 (R2-3), 3+3 (R1) - 109 pts minimum, 4 dice total (6 R1)
Heightened Perception Dorsal Kanan Front Arc: 4+2 (R2-3), 5+3 (R1) - 109 pts minimum, 6 dice total (8 R1)
Roark + Han (Gunner) YT-1300: 3+3 (R2-3), 4+4 (R1) - 128 pts minimum, 6 dice total (8 R1)
Roark + Han (Gunner) Trick Shot YT-1300 (obstructed): 3+3 (R2-3), 4+4 (R1) - 135 pts minimum, 8 dice total (10 R1)
Roark + Fringer YT-2400: 4+4 (R2-3), 2+2 (R1) - 138 pts minimum, 8 dice total (4 R1)
Roark + Leebo YT-2400: 4+4 (R2-3), 2+2 (R1) - 148 pts minimum, 8 dice total (4 R1)
Roark + Outrider Trick Shot Dash: 4+4 (R2-3) - 2+2 (R1) 165 pts minimum, 8 dice total (4 R1)
Roark + Outrider Trick Shot Dash (obstructed): 5+5 (R2-3) - 3+3 (R1) 165 pts minimum, 10 dice total (6 R1)
Roark + Dorsal K-Wing (Miranda): 2-3+2-3 (R2-3), 3-4+3-4 (R1) - 98 pts minimum, 4-6 dice total (6-8 R1)
Roark + Dorsal K-Wing (Miranda + Torpedo): 4+2-3 (R2-3), 3-4+3-4 (R1) - 107 pts minimum, 6-7 dice total (6-8 R1)

Add 12 pts each for Moldy Crow.

Miranda is the absolute cheapest option, but as soon as she burns out her shields (and Torpedoes), she loses firepower and becomes as weak as Kanan using his Turret arc. Kanan has the benefit of the force and supporting other ships, but his damage output is awful without being in R1 or lining up his 4 dice primary. Roark + YT-1300 might work as a sort of inverted YT-2400, not caring or even perhaps trying to close into R1 to sink 8 dice, but has less ranged damage and also can also benefit the opponent if you fail to initiative kill and they get to respond with R1 attacks of their own. It might be worth investing 7 pts to upgrade the pilot to Chewbacca to get Trick Shot, it'd make the YT-1300 a bit harder to kill and gives you 10 dice if you can get a R1 shot through an obstacle and still leaves you 16 pts ahead of Outrider-less Dash Rendar. Lando is a bit pricey of an upgrade (especially if you pair him with Nien) but gets you I5 during activation and gives you a free action on your blue maneuvers. Then of course there's the YT-2400s, namely Dash who these alternatives have to compare to. I'd expect Kanan isn't powerful enough and Miranda burns out too quickly for the setup, but I think Chewie/Lando make the YT-1300 a workable interesting alternative to Super Dash (particularly if that gets hit with price increases), considering they leave you with enough room for a 3rd ship.

Some squad ideas:

Trick Shot Chewie with Han+PerCo+Zeb / Trick Shot Moldy Crow Roark / Debris Gambit Sabine - 199 pts
Trick Shot Chewie with Han+PerCo / Squad Leader Moldy Crow Roark with TacOff / Airen Cracken - 199 pts
Trick Shot Chewie with Han+PerCo / Squad Leader Moldy Crow Roark with TacOff / Lieutenant Blount - 193 pts
Trick Shot Chewie with Han+PerCo / Squad Leader Moldy Crow Roark with TacOff / Selfless Gold Squadron Vet - 200 pts
Trick Shot Engine Upgrade Chewie with Han+PerCo+Zeb / Squad Leader Engine Upgrade Moldy Crow Roark with TacOff / Bandit Squadron Pilot - 199 pts
Trick Shot Lando with Han+PerCo+Nien / Moldy Crow Roark / Lieutenant Blount - 200 pts
Trick Shot Lando with Han+PerCo+Nien / Squad Leader Moldy Crow Roark with TacOff / Bandit Squadron Pilot - 199 pts
Trick Shot Outrider Dash with Han+PerCo / Squad Leader Moldy Crow Roark with TacOff - 193 pts

Plenty of options to explore if you felt like it: Blue Squadron X-Wing/B-Wing/U-Wing, Jan Ors, Debris Gambit Sabine, Jake Farrell, Kyle Katarn, Selfless Gold Squadron Vet, Arvel Crynyd, Airen Cracken, Zeb Orrelios, Captain Rex, Lieutenant Blount, AP-5, Bandit Squadron Pilot etc. all can fit at the very least on Super Chewie + Moldy Roark.

I feel like Lieutenant Blount synergizes the best: the game plan should put the YT-1300 close to enemies, which should make it easy to trigger his ability, and he's cheap enough to leave room for extra upgrades. Edit: I think I'd probably add Selfless to Blount myself, his value would drop like a brick once his wingmates go down, and the opponent should be targeting them first, so keeping them alive longer by eating crits for them is probably the best use of his EPT.
