Can Tractor FAIL as an action?

By Darth Seridur, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Page 11 of the Rules ref doesn't list Tractor as one of the actions that can fail. Have heard of TOs now ruling that Quadjumpers therefore can't FAIL their Spacetug Tractor Array Action.

Eg, measure for range 1. If out, just do a different action. That seems a bit odd to me.

ANythign that has the Action: keyword uses your action, regardless of whether it does anything. You don't get to backtrack just because it didn't puit a token down. It's not listed in the actions which canfail because it's not a default action that everyone might have that's defined in the rulebook.

i agree. you get to measure when you've choosen spacetug tractor array as you action. if there are no valid targets, nothing happens.

also, the effect is not optional, so of you only have your own ships in arc at range one, you have to assign one of them a tractor token.

if having no ships in arc constitutes failing the action, thus letting you use compusure, is another matter. i would say it does fail if there are no valid targets, but that's just my opinion.

YI'd argue that it should trigger composuere if there are no valid targets, personally. It might need a rulebook update to clarify that Action: abilities can fail and how, though.

Tractoring isn't an action, so it wouldn't be addressed there.

Tugs and Kylo are the only two things it matters for, I think. So it could specifically address "Action: Choose a ship at range..." type abilities.

Seems reasonable. "When performing any Action that requires you to measure a range to another object, after declaring the Action, check range to any number of eligible objects, then choose one. If any objects are within the required range/arc, one of them must be chosen. If no object can be chosen (not within the required range/arc), then the action fails."

Tractoring is an action for ships that can perform it as an action, therefore, if there is NO ship at the correct range/arc requirements, the action fails.

Furthermore, if equipped with Composure, sure, it triggers, as you failed an action and are unlikely to have a green token.

In all honesty, it's pretty clear.

Remember, the cards themselves can update/overwrite the Rules Reference as required allowing exceptions for certain pilots, ships, or upgrades.

Therefore, to the list of failable actions, when using a Quadjumper, you add Tractor to the list.
