Where do I start?

For list building, there are a couple of recent articles really worth digesting:

Part 1, and Part 2.

I won't rehash it all here, but it might worth trimming back a lot of the upgrades to get another DLT-19 squad.

I think starting out you're best to play with a full list, and avoid large bids (the 28 points this list is short of 800 was probably designed for winning Key Positions before it was errata-ed).

Lastly, think about beefing up the Snows with an extra trooper and grenades. They are what you want to hit the opponent hard, so you want them to survive to get that Flamethrower into range 1. The DLT-19 squads can hold back and do objective babysitting.

I book marked the page to read this afternoon.

thanks

I ended up with,

2 cores/ 2 snow troopers /2 recons Gen/ Veers

Thank you all for the ideas. I stole this from someone and thought it clicked.

(Two things were gifts and I got deals on the cores)

Testing (772/800)

It looks like a great start! My only feedback would be that big a bid is wholly unnecessary. I’d be inclined to put extra snowtrooper minis on those squads over the bid or even the extra stormtroopers. With them wanting to get up and in the fray, they really want the extra bodies to keep flamer alive. I’d toss some grenades on them too.

If you find yourself short on points, I’d be willing to ditch environmental gear on everybody but Veers - he doesn’t have to have it but it’s nice to give it to him so he can really scoot if he’s in serious trouble (like a Skywalker in charge range) regardless of terrain.

edit - for the funsies, I went to tabletop admiral and played with the units you’ve got. I ended up with:

Veers - commanding presence

4x Stormtrooper - DLT

2x Snowtrooper - flametrooper, impact grenades (for those pesky atrt, better dice, and you will want to be at range 1 anyway for the flamer), and extra snowtrooper mini

2x Scout strike team- sniper

2x speeder bike

Cool 800 points of awesomeness. I’d play this sometime (though I need to buy a 4th stormie unit since I didn’t get a second core set - yes my advice on buying was with experience of doing it wrong and how I’d do it differently if I was starting from scratch :) )

Nope, no painting requirement for this game.

I have never encountered ANY miniatures game with a painting REQUIREMENT. I have also never encountered a game that required you *not* to wear a clown suit to games.

@TallGiraffegiving me a reason to go full Hoth....

Because it's there. I painted 5 snowtroopers, Veers, a unit of snow bikes, an AT-ST and a couple e-webs. I use them on not-Hoth all the time. Stormtrooper armor can keep you alive in space, therefore any planet capable of sustaining life in the movies cannot be too hot or too cold for safety, only comfort.

Course this armies existence led me to get a black Friday 2nd AT-ST, which led me to add a 3rd ordinary stormtrooper squad so I could copy/paste my AT's over into a non-Hoth army... When generic officers hit my house I will have a nifty little Endor force.

For store games: Do folks mind all that much if your figs aren't painted up?

No. Unpainted is presently the cultural norm for store pickup games of all minis that use lots of graphics design and protected IP's for their marketing.

And is there some kind of table etiquette regarding obstacles and terrain? I mean is a person expected to bring half and the opponent the other half? On Legion night at a store, are pick up games common or are games arranged before hand most times?

Depends on your store.

What do people use for building lists? Are there sites with examples of lists? Are there games that are streamed?

Tabletop Admiral is good, so is Battlescribe.

Amazon has starters for 56 so two cores was no problem
