Do we really want a 2.0?

By Irokenics, in Star Wars: Armada

I would like a version 1.1 refresher pack for about £15 or $20.

  • New rulebook containing all the updates and newer rules like Contain, Raid, Flotillas, Tournament regulations, 400 point MOV chart etc.
  • Reprinted FAQed cards like TRC, Most Wanted, Rhymer, Avenger, Rieekan etc. 1 of each unique and two of each other card.
  • Point reductions on some of the poor upgrade cards like QLTs, Sensor Teams, Devastator, Redemption, Tagge. Again 1 of each unique and two of each other card.
  • 2 new officers and 2 new ship titles for each faction to give veterans a little present and another reason to buy this product. A second interdictor title for example.

To be fair, I'd rather have discussions about an hypothetical 2.0 than endless Salt Threads, Salt Threads with 50% less sodium or gluten-free Armada is Dead. There's a lot of healthy discussion to be had under the 2.0 moniker, even though I feel most people don't particularly want an actual 2.0

I feel there are some rules revisions the game would benefit from (namely Intel = Grit and possibly a reworking of objectives). I don't necessarily think it requires new packaging or the 2.0 branding, but FFG might feel differently.

I don’t think we need a 2.0.

if we need anything it’s more regular new releases & better communication from FFG.

You can implement clone wars factions (which I wouldn’t mind) without the need for all the fuss of an official 2.0.

This would allow cross faction ships, such as the Acclamator (which I also favour)

we do not need 2.0 we need clones and droids and robotclones

I dont want "2.0" maybe its more accurate to call it "1.5" - I would like a digital list building app, with points that could be adjusted easily instead of waiting months for faq/errata fixes.

No reason ExL is 13, LeiaA is 38, AFK Mk 2 A .. 81?? And all that jazz, etc.

I don't think Armada needs a 2.0.

That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing some of the problematic upgrades wiped out via errata or a restricted list.

Also, burn down all the objectives and make new ones. Currently, only 10 or so of the 24 objectives are regularly used, and they are getting pretty boring.

Well I'll go ahead and be the minority here. I absolutely want Armada 2.0. My biggest issue, one I've had for a long time, is that I absolutely abhor squadron play. It's slow, fiddly, and very luck reliant. Though it's possible (I do it often) to do well without squadrons, it's pretty darn difficult in the current environment. My other issue, activation advantage (and as a result, the first/last problem) has not been fixed by including things like Pryce, Bail, and Strategic Advisor. MSU type fleets feel like they are in a worse spot now than they ever have been, as large ships have been given the tools to compete in the activation game.

To me, the 2-ship Imperial archetype that is currently making waves is the least interesting fleet around. The saddest thing... It sort of feels like that's where the current version of Armada (1.0 plus 7 waves) has pointed us.

You can call it 1.25, 1.5, 2.0, mk2, it really doesn't matter. I would wholeheartedly embrace some fundamental rule revisions... and an app while we're at it. Balancing points is hard, while letting you balance points on the fly is amazing and (in my opinion) the future of wargaming.

2.0 or not, at least rework squadron play. Solutions have been suggested, not taking away strategical / tactical value yet simplifying interaction and reducing squad play time. Squads...age old discussion here...are important and its Star Wars etc, but at least to me it was always a capital ship game, and always will be.

Kill Yavaris and Demo if you have to, but RapidReload is right also, often a „problem“ can be solved by player and local meta adjustment.

What if we're all actually playing 2.0 right now?

What if 1.0 was before the Relay nerf, and Flotilla spam - and they simply never TOLD us it was 2.0, but we've been doing it all this time!

As I wasn't required to donate a months rent to ffg for their optimization, I doubt it.

BTW, notice how the Demo hate peaked again after relay nerf and the introduction of Brunson. Its almost as if a great fix of a problematic mechanic had unforeseen problems leading to just another issue. Excited to see what Intel change to give Grit might bring us ;-p.

Mind blown!

I just want a complete rework of the activation mechanic. It has basically killed the game (which I adore otherwise) for me. It rewards fleet building (designing last/first) over skill and is the death of fun to be on the receiving end of it. There is no effective counter to it besides playing that same mechanic back at your opponent.

I don’t give a flying **** if they do it in 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, or the “oh god Lucas is back” digitally remastered edition. Just fix activation.

While the app has benefits in 2nd Edition X-wing it is also lacking. You can build squads with it but it didn't take long to wish for better. It lacks a lot of features and while we'll soon see what happens with the ability for point adjustments there are some costs to taking the points off the cards and upgrades off the pilots.

The big drawback in my opinion is you can't look at your opponent's list or your own for that matter and know if is legal or not from the cards on the table. You have to consult the app or some printout.

It is difficult to throw lists together from looking at your cards. I think this is partially the motivation for providing the quick-builds so that you can put lists together without the app.

If Armada is going to go the app route, I recommend a far better one than was provided thus far for 2nd Edition X-wing.

This is the 700th time I've seen someone ask something about 2.0

I have a question

What evidence, whatsoever, is there that there will be a 2.0? It's been a year since a release, why would they suddenly roll out an entirely redone system for a game they don't put out product for?

Because the new system will be Sequel Trilogy only, to capitalise on the huge excitement for the ships it introduced, and the fact that people find the OT ships boring, slow and dated. They need to keep this quiet until the SSD comes out because they’ve been working on it for 2+ years and need a return on their investment, but there is no point in reprinting waves 1-7 because they are going full sequel trilogy in late 2019, to coincide with the release of episode 9, the launch of the Disney Star Wars parks, the Resistance TV show, the new Rey Trilogy and the Poe Dameron stand alone film.

This is really all I want, more errata, with cards to replace the old, and faction starter packs for new players.

This. I don't want Armada 2.0, I want FFG 2.0.

Oh, and I don't want an app because it would make me even more dependent on FFG to play.

+1 for me too. The game works well as is. Most rule changes/erratas players want are to aspects of the game that are the weakness to their play style or favorite builds. I'm almost always behind in activation so I have to keep that in mind when building, deploying, and playing. Too many tweaks and it waters down the unique identities of the ships.

On the other hand expansions should be more readily available or have shorter times in between restocking.+6 months is a long wait especially when trying to attract new players at such a high entry cost. (Not saying cost is unreasonable just high) Cross faction buying also needs to be remedied.

I do NOT want a 2.0.

That being said, I'm not in charge, so if they're going to do it, I have no problems offering suggestions for how to do it best and with the least amount of screwups.

me too... I have rule document and up to 8 expansions that could inspire them, not care if they just copy-paste them XD

Armada Legacy! Who else wants to buy Liberties across the faction line just so that we can rip up Spinal Armament!!!!

Please no 2.0, unlike x-wing that was having near unfixable problems so needed a reset button pushed. Armada has no big issues, just some small ones that don't effect too much. If they did reset they would need to update and rerelease all the expansions, I don't want to have to wait around half a decade before I see another new ship for this game

The point I was trying to make was what we really want is an Armada game that has proper support and management from FFG.

Like someone mentioned before, a FFG 2.0.

Edited by Irokenics

I don't want a V2, I don't think Armada player base would support a new version, they would not remove squadrons which some want, any major overhaul of the activation system would create as many issues as it solves (see attempts so far in new officers) it would be expensive both to us and to FFG. What I do want is a wave a year and support in events (that we currently get, though they are getting mean with the tokens only three a set which is useless) better comms would be nice but its not like they manage that for any game, articles would be nice but would probably fail to match the quality of the better fan me reports on the forums.

The great thing about Armada is the balance. Everything can be countered with what's already in the game. 2.0 risks dumbing the game down and making an expensive X-Wing.

I don't expect any news until Star Wars celebration or May 4th at the earliest. We have to remember Disney does get a say when their franchises' licensees release new content. FFG is a lot better than other companies I've dealt with.

My big question is what is product code swm28 going to be? Seriously, it goes swm27, swm29, swm30.

no. errata is mostly fine.

errata gladiator and yavaris and I think we got a stew goin
