When you say Vader and 5 Tie. Do you mean Vader and his Advance Tie plus 5 more Tie or Vader using one of the 5 Tie/in?

Vader has to be in the advanced.

but that actually sounds like a decent way to practice “Ace + lots of friends”, which you sound sold on.

I think i am leaning towards the Imerpial for learning. After a game or two today I might grab a Vader and mess with some TIE/In.

As I play more (as long as I like it seeing today will be my first games, I’ll keep an eye on the Separatists)

I'd offer a different approach to this. Wait until you've played a few games to work out how you enjoy flying.

Do you like moving lots of ships around?

Do you like flying in formation?

Do you like dodging arcs?

Do you like rolling slowly towards your opponent and launching an alpha strike?

Do you like rolling lots of dice?

Do you like turrets?

Do you like bombs?

etc etc

Only then do you decide on a faction.

Can I do all that with just two ships? Feel like I have to spend a little at first to get a feel??

People at your FLGS will almost certainly be willing to lend.

Or try it out online.

You’ll need to borrow from folks, who I’m sure would be happy to help.

some TIE/I n .

Just throwing this out there because I know I was confused for a while:

TIE/in is an Interceptor

TIE/ln is actually a lowercase “L”, the LN stands for “line,” or the basic model of TIE.

How do I try it out online?

Vassal, or Tabletop Simulator are the two most popular ones. There's a thread about the latest Vassal mod on page 1 or 2.

FlyCasual X-Wing simulator isn't terrible either, if you're just interested in trying out various archetypes to gauge interest. It crashes 9 times out of 10 if you're playing online, but I've rarely had issues playing vs AI. The AI isn't a strong opponent, so it's not worth much to people practicing for tournaments, but again, not bad for trying out a list archetype.
