mini transport

By Wiredin, in X-Wing

my Starfortress is taking beating. I have it in my battelfoam bag, but it's a 216 and the bomber is super awkward in there. I've tried to protect the little wings as much as possible but they have broken off twice now. Nothing a little super glue won't fix... but I'd rather not put it through more pain.

How do you transport your big unwieldy ships like the upsilon, YV666, and Starfortress? Especially if you are flying to another city.

Dedicated feldherr foam that has the right shape? Just a guess.

I don’t have a Star fortress, but it’s worked for my YV.

Mine lives on the shelf in the original clamshell...

If you have the original packaging, you're golden. If not, have you heard of micro hangars? Google Sir Willibald. He makes PDFs that you print yourself

Dang! Ninja'd

Third on Sir Willibald. I do use them for a lot of ships, just haven’t tried the large base stuff.

Sir Willi has nothing for the BSF :(

If you give me the dimensions, I can whip something up for you. It will be basically a blank box, but it should work.

Don't worry, he does.

It's in the Resistance pack (version 13)

I've made lots of his little ones with no problem. This was my first large one with reinforcing and two sheets to glue together. I did it in a bit of a hurry and it came out a little crooked.

I would take the time to glue the reinforcing panels on and let them dry, then glue a set of side panels together and go from there.

I meant to quote you so you'd be sure to see the reply, but I don't use the quote button much...so, look up.

And regarding Sir Willi's box for the Starfortress: two fit in a single box quite happily.

Not that I have two of them. Or keep trying to make two them work in a list somehow. In spite of losing. A lot. Badly.

You gotta' make them kill whatever they're after fast. Veteran Turret Gunner and both types of bombs. They are not easy to use and they WILL go down.

You've just got to make sure they take their targets down with them. Make plentiful use of that arc rotation. Genuinely more useful than Focus past Alpha on the Starfortress. Make large fields of fire where your enemy doesn't want to be.

I get some of the camper foam mattress stuff, and cut it to fit to make padding. For the Starfortress itself (A really unwieldy shape) I also put it in one of those white cardboard card game boxes.

thats a good idea. I'll see if she will fit in one of my deck boxes. I'm taking one to PHX for hyperspace....coming from Canada. so it would be nice if it survives the trip.

p.s. I'm not sold on vet turret gunner unless you are going all in on the double tap with Rey as well. Vennie/Rey/VTG/C3PO/TS/PB/SC

L'ulo/Heroic

Bastian/M9G8

not what I'm taking to PHX, but it's pretty good.

Keep in mind I've never had to fly to an event, so I've never... shipped my ships. I shudder to think about sending my collection through airport baggage.

I got my battlefoam that will be traveling with me in the cabin. the only thing that worries me is the BSF right now. I may look at alternative ways to transport tonight tho.... no need to take the whole foam kit for 2 lists...

I've got three KR cases - one for each faction - and a smaller KR Halo case for taking stuff to competitions.

But honestly? I usually just show all my stuff in the Core Set box and take rhat.

I haven't put my StarFortress in my Battlefoam yet, but my current plan is to cut off most of 1 wing and use some paint to try and make it look like the wing was blown off in a battle. It should fit in 2" of foam as long as 1 of the wings is shortened a good deal.

Can you bend it/partially tear it, like it struck an obstacle (using heat)? or do you have to completely remove it?

Feldherr.

Coming from 40k, I found it easier to distinguish the types of storage you use. I separate it into "at home" storage" and "travel storage". Home storage is not really that big a deal or hard because it just sits there without being banged of juggled or moved about. You dont have to be as careful with that for these reasons. travel storage is also fairly easy. This is because you can fairly easily pre-make your fleet(s) before leaving home and pack up only those specific ships you need. Army Transport works very well. Especially if you save the plucked foam to pack in around ships in their holes where movement is possible. If your really paranoid, you can get a huge roll of bubble wrap fairly cheap at walmart. If your fleet is very small, you can be the cool guy and pick up empty wooden cigar boxes at tobacco stores (they sell the nice wooden ones so dont settle for carboard crap. These often have actual clasps or magnet tops. You can foam line them and bubble wrap the ships inside rubber band the top well to prevent accidental openings. If you wanna be super fancy, hobby lobby and other places sell "wooden box books" that look like harback books. Do them the same way you do the cigar boxes.

This is a treat coming from 40k. Carrying around a 2,000 point army is a few trips in and out from your car at a tourney when you play guard. This is a breeze compared to that.

ya home storage is easy, no problems there. even day to day storage to local venues no problem. but flying or traveling longer distances is a different story. Luckily with the new regional replacement tournaments there will be less travel, but System Opens are still something I will need to get on a plane for at least. The pleasures of living in the prairie provinces of Canada.

anyways, the suggestion above about a game box got me to look at a 400count deck box I bought for my Keyforge this past weekend. I took some cube foam and both of my lists for PHX, dials, cards, and bases all fit in the deck box. Only thing out of the box is templates, tokens, and dice... plus tourney tray. I'm good now! And don't need to worry about ship breakage... I hope.
