+2 on roll skill card & emergency jump

By rashktah, in Battlestar Galactica

Hi!

I'm sure that this has been asked somewhen already, but I could not find a answer via the search option.

There's a skill card that lets you add 2 points to a die roll. Sorry, I don't know the english name for the card as I'm only in posession of the german version of the BSG game.

Is it possible to add these 2 points to the roll for the emergency jump, too?

In my opinion this would nearly diminish every ounce of danger that the emergency jump presents.

Yes, Strategic Planning (the +2 to die roll card), can be played before any die roll, including the one from an early FTL Controll jump.

This reduces the chances to lose population fron 75% to 50%.

Thank you very much!! :)

I have a similar question. In the last game, I was playing as Kat. I used hotshot twice on the FTL control to guarantee a safe emergency jump (no die roll at all... just discard a card of 5 strength). One of the players thought it was a bit overpowered and wondered if it was legal. It says, "When you would roll a die during your Action step, you may instead discard a Skill Card. Use the card's strength +2 instead of the die roll." I told him it was a die roll on my action step, so we let it go and continued to play.

I haven't seen anything in the FAQ against using hotshot on the FTL. Is it legal? I guess it does seem a little odd that it guarantees a safe emergency jump.

It's perfectly legal, keep in mind that there is only one strength 5 card per deck (maybe two with the expansion I'm not sure), so to make a safe jump you have either to have a strebgth 5 card or a strength 3 card and someone must play Strategic Planning.

While this is surely a powerful combination it requires to sacrifice a potential life saver card.

And remember that if someones gives Kat an Excecutive Order she can't use her ability because it's not her turn. It greatly limits her usefulness.

Re: Kat.

Yeah, she's a pretty abusive character. Not only is she a trickster with FTL control, but she's positively a baller with pegasus weapons locations as well. But there's nothing quite like shaving a couple of turns off here and there (and really, a 5 is worth it).

As far as I'm aware, you can't use Strategic Planning in conjunction with Kat's ability.

That's correct. You can't use a Strategic Planning in conjunction with Kat's ability because you're not actually rolling a die. Same with Calculations.

Her ability is really good, but most of the time's you're rolling a die you want a 7-8 and discarding a 5 strength card to get it is a pretty decent cost, especially considering that it's only on her turn and only during her Action phase.

I didn't know that, but it makes sense, she isn't rolling a dice so Strategic Planning shouldn't have effect.

Hi, got another question about strategic plannig - can one use it before cylon attack roll? For example to help raider shoot down viper, or basestar to damage galactica?

EDIT - Nevermind, found the answer. ( No option for deleting post? :( )

For those that haven't found the answer it is - if you are an unrevealed cylon, or a very weirdly acting human, then yes you can do this, it works for any roll. Expect to be behind bars very very swiftly afterward as it is likely to be considered a tad cylonish

If you are a revealed cylon you cannot use the card in this way.
