3 Upsilon-Class Shuttles

By markrivett, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I ran into this hyperspace-legal list recently.

All equipped with Collision Detectors to minimize the obvious counter-strategy which is to pull them into obstacles.

My opponent was a competent pilot and ensured that if I was in the blind-spot of one or two, the at least one would always have a shot.

Any suggestions on how to take it down?

I love the Upsilon. It’s one of my favorites. But if you can zoom in behind it, you can toast it before it ever gets turned around.

That works with a single one. With three its a little more complicated than that.

Ships with boost > barrel roll against trip ups. This comes from experience. I had Midnight trying to arc dodge trip ups and a barrel roll got me out of 1 of the 3 arcs, where as a boost would have dodged all three :( Many times in that match I wanted boost SO badly. Boost + barrel roll like Silencers, Poe, etc. even better.

Black One Title is golden in this matchup as you can 4 straight and 4 k behind them all, or if you are in a real bad spot, you can slam into them. Resistance Han is a good counter to a Dormitz trip ups list as he starts behind two of them already and can focus on melting Dormitz.

I saw a talli Awing almost solo three of them. One was on 1 hull left, one was on 3 hull left, and one was full. Talli was on 1 hull, but had great positioning on all three Ups, and I guarantee with enough time, the Awing would have done it. If you can kill one, and still have a boost+barrel ship, I think you can win that match with enough time left. Bring some firepower. I think something like Poe with HLC, a bomber, and an awing can beat trip ups. Just send the bomber in to die and maybe almost kill one, Poe and Awing take it out, and if only two ups are left, one of your aces can do damage.

Tavson, supernatty kylo, and an FO can take out trips too. If Tavson does enough damage and Kylo takes the injured one out, Kylo can easily solo two Ups and never get touched again.

My favorite resistance list right now, and I think can take trip ups:

Poe Dameron (68)
Trick Shot (1)
R4 Astromech (2)
Integrated S-Foils (0)
Black One (2)

Han Solo (Resistance) (76)
Trick Shot (1)
Rey (14)

Tallissan Lintra (35)
Heroic (1)

Total: 200

or this: my next list to playtest:

Poe Dameron (68)
Trick Shot (1)
R4 Astromech (2)
Integrated S-Foils (0)
Black One (2)
Hardpoint: Cannon (0)
Heavy Laser Cannon (4)

Vennie (67)
C-3PO (Resistance) (6)
Paige Tico (7)
Veteran Turret Gunner (8)

Tallissan Lintra (35)

Total: 200

"Get behind them" sounds easy but can be hard to do on all three. You'll likely get behind one and be pounded on by the other two. It's a tough match up. They have lot of health and a lot of fire power and can back each other up pretty well.

If you can bait them to congregate to one side of the board you'll have an easier time flanking them. It should be easier to outmaneuver them if you get them to bunch up as well.

you pretty much have to overwhelm them with stress and ions until they fly off the board. thats probably the easiest way. fight jank with jank

Out of curiosity, how was it flown? Are they spreading all 3 out for deployment?

He placed two side-by-side about mid-deployment zone. He placed the third in a corner.

So, my options were…

1. Joust with one, get flanked by 2

2. Joust with two, get flanked by 1

3. Flank 2 while third lumbers in keeping my ships in his arc.

I chose option 3.

He was a pretty solid pilot. He forced me into distributing my firepower to the point that, by the time the game ended I had destroyed one, while the other two had no shields and some damage. It was a frustrating experience, but in hindsight I should have flown my own ships better. Low pilot skill large-base blocking is a real pain, and I could have probably hung back in order to minimize blocking.

Thanks @markrivett , that's interesting. Makes sense from the Ups flyer, would be fun to test it out. Sure seems clunky.

We'll see how the point change affects it soon.

If anyone can be bothered to fly this, good luck to them I say. Looks horrible.

Looks like a rather unpleasant experience to fly against, and I think a lot of trip ups players will consistently go like 4-2 in tournament play. But the top guys will be ready for it and know how to minimize the pain of the first round, thus they won't make many top 8/4's once everyone is a bit more used to it.

It's just kind of like the quad wookies for first edition, you can beat it but the whole experience is rather like walking through molasses.

So this is evil. There's really no way to soak that kind of damage, you have to dodge, so you need to go FAST and get behind them...

Black One can do it, as can Res Han, equipped with Boba Crew, and Moralo. Speed and boost in general will also help.

However, if you can carefully plan your placement, you could handle it. Flanking would be hard, but if you plan your approach, you can be out of range, then zoom in and bump to survive, then K around
