Gavin Darklighter + 5 bandits

By jblum23, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Gavin Darklighter (e-wing)- proton Torpedoes, R3 astromech, fire control (83points)

5x bandit z-95 (23x5=115 points)

total= 198

Didn’t see anything along these lines on the forum. Anybody try this or have opinions on whether or not it can be competitive?

So Gavin. Might want to put the first name of the character in so people don't come here confused and wondering why you're looking to run Biggs with a mini-swarm.

I was wondering how to get a fire control (system) on a T-65

Whoops! My bad. Gavin Darklighter E-wing pilot.

r4 is just so much better than r3, even with torpedoes and the e-wing ship ability. having the hard ones white and the hard and bank twos blue makes the e-wing so much better. imho, the ship is barely worth flying with any other astromech.

"Is it competitive?"

Most things can be if they're in the right hands.

It should be good against large ships and aces won't likely escape all the arcs, but it seems like it might have better legs if you dropped one Zed and put missiles on them in order to throw more red dice. Otherwise I'd expect them to do almost as good as a TIE swarm + Ace.

I played the 1.0 version of this (when Gavin was Etahn). I think it's probably actually better now than it was then. 6 ships is not bad, they all have at least 4hp behind at least 2 greens, and crits are generally nastier now. The Zs generally want to rush things (getting several at R1 can be nice), while Gavin stays back as best he can at R3 to give arc coverage. Given that the Zs don't need to be at any specific distance of Gavin, you don't even need to hold any specific formation, which makes the Zs that much less predictable. I might agree with @meffo , different astromech might be better than the R3. R4 is good, regen could also be good. Just not really sure the 2nd lock is needed.

This list is why I owned too many Rebel Z-95s.

Lol. Nice. I’m glad you weighed in on this since you played the 1.0 version. R4 astromech is REALLY GOOD. There is definitely some flexibility with points to kit out Gavin. I thought the R3 astromech synergizes nicely with the e-wing ship ability.

I fly a list similar to this that has had some decent success. I prefer having X-wings to Zs though to make sure to actually land those crits. Doesn't seem to be too many low agility large ship lists around these days.

I actually fly it with Biggs to attempt to keep Gavin alive as long as possible. Then 2 blue squad Xs. 3 X-wings and an E-wing is just a lot of solid frames to work with and I consistently trigger Gavin's ability and actually land those crits with the 3 attack dice everyone has. If they try to go straight for Gavin you can use Biggs to protect him and as already mentioned, this doesn't necessarily require formation flying, so it is flexible enough to split up.
