Dalan Oberos Kimogila ability

By Slade, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Dalan's ability reads - 'At the start of the Engagement Phase, you may choose 1 shielded ship in your bullseye arc and spend 1 charge. If you do, that ship loses 1 shield and you recover 1 shield.'

Has it been clarified that the ability can be used even if Dalan has full shields? Or does the ability not work if Dalan is fully shielded?

Thx.

there is already a topic in this forum where this is discussed.

there is no clarification as of right now. some people seem to think he can use the ability even if he's unable to recover a shield. i agree, but that's besides the point. you need to ask your TO if at a tournament. i recommend agreeing with you opponent before a game starts in a casual setting.

Actually, the rules indicate that you cannot recover a shield if "All shields are on their active sides", so Oberos' ability will not trigger/can't be used.

IMO, you can resolve it if the enemy ship has a shield to lose, or Dalan has an inactive shield to gain, or if both are true. You definitely can't resolve it if you can't do either.

That’s incorrect, Dalan can’t use the ability if there are no ships in his bullseye with an active shield token. That’s what “shielded” means.

This is a discussion about whether partially resolving the second half of the effect is legal. Of course you have to fulfill the initial condition.

IMO , you can resolve it if the enemy ship has a shield to los e, o r Dalan has an inactive shield to gain , or if b oth are tru e .

I was responding to this ^ post which was worded in a way that said the ability could be used if any of the 3 conditions you gave were true, but the second condition you gave alone is not enough to satisfy Dalan’s requirements.

In my opinion:

This above is the "cost-paying bit" of the ability. We have to be able to fulfil it in order to use the ability.

This is the ability-resolution bit. What we can do for the costs we paid.

Judging by one of the FAQ responses:

Quote

Note that if the ship uses Saturation Salvo against a ship that rolled 3 defense dice (for example: <evade>, blank, blank), it must choose exactly 2 of those dice to be rerolled, as it must resolve the effect as completely as possible (on 2 eligible dice, in this case).

I would rule out that the second part simply has to be fulfilled 'as completely as possible'.

This is a situation that doesn't have a "resolve as completely as possible" - the first part is a "may choose", which requires the condition of an enemy ship being in your bullseye arc, but the moment you choose, the second clause comes in, which is a "must" - if you do, that ship loses one shield and you recover one shield. As per my earlier point, the rules explicitly state that you cannot recover shields if all of your shields are on their active side. As a result, Oberos must be able to recover a shield for his ability to resolve, and if he cannot, the second part of the recover effect can't take place.
