The Mystery Knight

By JerusalemJones, in 6. AGoT Spoiler Space

About a week ago I picked up the new Warriors anthology, which contains Martins' new Dunk and Egg story, The Mystery Knight. All in all, a pretty good tale. Again, we are treated to a piece of history, and one that would give away a large secret of the story if I were to give it away. The story itself invovled D&E, on their way north, come across a party of nights and lords on their way to a wedding, where the winner of the joust will receive a dragon's egg as his prize. Hoping to win some money and perhaps some fame, and to get some warm food for themselves, Dunk decides to attend with several other hedge knights he meets up with along the way.

As always, Martin weaves an interesting tale, and this time only pays token respect the Egg's secret. The real mystery in this tale is who is attending this wedding, and why. As the story progesses we are treated to the intrigues and adventures that fill his SoI&F novels, though on a smaller scale, and all the mysteries are wrapped up by the end. We are also treated to more information about Bloodraven, who comes across as one of the mroe itneresting characters in Martin history of Westeros, and I think will end up playing a larger role in these stories. I sometimes wonder if Martin isn't also writingthese as companion pieces to ASoI&F, to help lay the groundwork for events that will happen in the story.

We also learn a little more about the dragon eggs, though truly only a little more. And the story mentions at least 3 other eggs that are different than the ones Illyrio gives Dany (one white, one gold and one red, as opposed to his black, cream and green). At first I though that one or mroe of the dragon eggs might match with the ones we are used to, but upon futher checking that wasn't the case. We also learnthat Maester Aemon had an egg, but do't know what it looked like.

Still, an enjoyable read, and a nice addition to the world of Westeros. Sure, I'd rather be reading Dance, but I'll take event his little taste for the time being.

I didn't know it was released it. :)

Finally something to keep me going until the next book is released... or at least HBO screens the GoT pilot.

Graet summary and a very enjoyable and wonderful story IMO. Was great to read this recently in preparation for ADwD!

What I always wondered about Dunk and Egg was weather or not George intended the particulars of the story to be important to Asoiaf or just generally interesting and a nice treat for fans willing to read a little bit more. What do people think?

i dont believe that the dunk and egg tales are essential to the reading of ASoIaF but i always thought the events at summerhall are what sent into motion the events of Ice and Fire

Summerhall is definitely what caused magic to start leaking back into the world.

Care to elaborate? I'd like to hear this.

I had the same thought a few days ago but when my girlfriend asked why all I could do was look knowledgable and reply "Well, because...SUMMERHALL"
Is there any actual proof for it other than that?

This thread is interesting reading in light of dance. Its pretty clear that the D&E stuff ties directly into ASoIaF in ways we didn;'t expect. The bloodraven thing in dance took my breath away.

Ah I must admit I was so happy that Bloodraven turned out to be relevant as this was one prediction I made that was spot on. TMK really was tipped me off. It made up for every wrong guess I made and will make about the plot of aSoIaF. There is potentially a lot more revelations about the sage in Dunk and Egg since Brienne remembers seeing a shield with exactly the arms as Dunk (which Dunk made up in THK). I personally think Dunk and Egg are really meant to be the beginning of the events that culminate in the last Ice and Fire books. The next one about the "She-Wolves" of Winterfell might indeed be revealing as well.

Just finally picked it up today. It was certainly an enjoyable read, but I didn't really find it as moving as either of the first two Dunk and Egg stories.

Also, am I the only one here that would have been for the Black dragon? I can't help but find myself liking the Blackfyres for some reason.

Also, am I right in thinking that the snot nosed 4 year old that the Lord Frey is dandling on his knee might very well be our own Late Lord Frey? I've only got a rough timeline in my head, but we do know he's about a billion years old. Lol, only beaten out by Maester Aemon, who we know is alive at this point in the stories.

Very likely, although I though there was only about 10 years between Walder and Aemon; isn't Aemon in his 20s in these stories? Guess someone will have to do the number crunching (or at least find out for sure the age of Aemon in the D&E setting).

Aemon was 102 years old in AFfC, and Lord Frey is in his 90s...

So could be. We know GRRM has trouble keeping track of his dates and eye colours, so it might very well be, if Aemon was in his mid-to-late teens (which, as everyone seems to mature quickly in this series, is very possible).
