Came back for 2.0, X-Wing list question

By JarJarBot, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I played a decent amount of 1.0 then sold out if it then came back in at the start of 2.0. My favorite thing about 2.0 was that they buffed one of my favorite ships; X-Wings.

Now I've been running;

Wedge w/Predator

Thane w/ Crack Shot

Garven w/Crack Shot

Biggs

It's gone undefeated at my, very small, shop and been enjoying it. Others have not been enjoying it so much. They say it's a very meta build and difficult to fight. So, I don't really keep up with any kind of meta and was wondering; is this list meta? Regional winning? To a point that point increases may happen?

Meta? Nah. It's good, and probably a lot of fun to play.

2.0 is still new enough that meta claims are a bit disingenuous. Flying well is the new meta. Many are having to learn to fly again after having ships in 1.0 that just skirt around the battlefield with TLTs.

X-Wings are good again. There's a trick though. You gotta fly them together. They're really deadly when you have multiples firing at the same target. So, they take practice.

If a good opponent can split up the X-Wings, they can be picked apart pretty easy. Once they pick up a stress they're very predictable. Their maneuverability is not on par with some of the lighter ships. So, once they're stressed a lighter ship can take advantage and pick them apart. Given of course that the lighter ship lived through the process of splitting them up.

If I'm flying against a list like that. I make the X-Wings chase me into the asteroids. That forces them to split up. I'll create bump situations that gets them mucked up. They eventually have to turn around. They're stressed at that point and completely out of formation. I'll try and separate Wedge and get him off the board. So, does that strategy sound like "Difficult to fly against"? Sure does, but that's the point of the game. You have to fly well to do well.

I will absolutely not joust a list like that.

One question. Have you flown against any Quadjumpers? There are a few things X-Wings hate. Being on rocks. Flying through rocks. Flying through debris, and being tractored for one less defense die. 1 defense die X-Wings die very quickly.

If there's anything meta in the game right now, it's the Quadjumper. It's a 28 point ship that brings absolute chaos to your nice little formation. I wouldn't worry about your X-Wings. They're doing exactly what they're supposed to do. Fly them well and you'll do well. Fly them poorly and you'll be blown off the mat.

Alright, cool, good to hear. I do fly them in a pretty tight formation and have been getting pretty good with them. No quadjumper opponents yet though. I had to promise to fly 2 x-wings max in my list next week or go imperial to make everyone feel good, lol. Maybe I'll show them your post!

This.

In as far as there's a 'meta', it's probably high initiative alpha strikes with torpedoes - looking at your list, for example, one could build a list which lobs three proton torpedoes at I6 or above*, which with pretty average rolls - even below-average rolls - will turn one X-wing to drifting scrap metal before the shooting stars, and can do that from range 3, where your primary weapons' return fire is pretty ineffectual and lining up a bullseye is hard.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice list, and I'd love to fly against it. 4 X-wings is the most you'll ever get on the board at once (since the Blue Squadron Escort is pointedly 4 1 points) so getting 2 of the 3 best pilots on the field instead is great.

A reliance on bullseye abilities is the only weakness I can see - lining up bullseyes isn't easy - though it's not as hard as a lot of people make out - but lining up multiple ships' bullseye on the same target really isn't easy unless you stop trying to fly in formation; and if you do, then Moustache Darklighter becomes just A.N.Other X-wing.

Well done on going undefeated! What (out of curiousity) were you facing?

* for the sake of argument, we had a Yavin event, and the best rebel list was:

  • Wedge Antilles - Swarm Tactics, Proton Torpedoes, R3 Astromech, Servomotor S-Foils
  • Luke Skywalker - Heightened Perception, Proton Torpedoes, R3 Astromech, Servomotor S-Foils
  • "Dutch" Vander - Proton Torpedoes, R3 Astromech

Dutch moves up and locks a target, allows Wedge to acquire a lock on it, then gains a free lock on a second target.

Luke moves up and locks a second target.

Wedge moves up and focuses.

Wedge Swarm-Tactics-es Dutch to I6, Luke spends force to fire at I7.

Lol....

Fly this next time. They’ll beg for the X-Wings again. JK...

It's not meta. Lololo

I think some people define meta as whatever beats them that's wrong.

Your not doing 3 xwings your using 4 that's good, you made a excellent decision using biggs. The fact thane is used more then Biggs makes no sense they are same points. If you practice enough it can do good at larger events aim for hyperspace format.

I like the Bomber "swarm" in this list but I'm not sure what Whisper brings to it. Isn't her whole thing to carry Vader around and cause misery? I don't think I've ever seen her run without Vader crew. What other options are there for ≤56 points which could be potentially more beneficial? Feel free to tell me why you think Whisper works in this list too, always happy to learn!

She is actually very solid just for her cost. Alternatively you could fly Fel with Pred. No bid but this build doesn’t really necessitate it.

It is just nice to have something to parallel the bombers all grouped up together. Creates a nice pincer maneuver and forces the enemy to turn one way or the other.

You could also go all in on ordinance with an alpha class star wing or another bomber. But balance is nice too.
