Sato - A Venture into the Unknown

By Muntman, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

So decided to give Sato a go. Do not seem him used much here, but a guy ran him with success at our Regionals so decided to try my hand at it. I am atm using what I have so this is what I got. Feedback would be appreciated! :)

Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 400/400

Commander: Commander Sato

Assault Objective: Opening Salvo
Defense Objective: Fire Lanes
Navigation Objective: Superior Positions

[ flagship ] CR90 Corvette A (44 points)
- Commander Sato ( 32 points)
- Jainas Light ( 2 points)
- Turbolaser Reroute Circuits ( 7 points)
= 85 total ship cost

MC30c Scout Frigate (69 points)
- Intel Officer ( 7 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)
- H9 Turbolasers ( 8 points)
- Assault Proton Torpedoes ( 5 points)
= 93 total ship cost

MC30c Scout Frigate (69 points)
- Intel Officer ( 7 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)
- H9 Turbolasers ( 8 points)
- Assault Proton Torpedoes ( 5 points)
= 93 total ship cost

GR-75 Medium Transports (18 points)
- Comms Net ( 2 points)
= 20 total ship cost

1 Shara Bey ( 17 points)
1 Tycho Celchu ( 16 points)
1 Corran Horn ( 22 points)
1 Hera Syndulla ( 28 points)
1 Han Solo ( 26 points)
= 109 total squadron cost

This list doesn't make the best use of Sato IMO. And there are a few other flaws.

  • First the CR90 with TRC won't need Sato at all. You could save points by downgrading to a HH.
  • The MC30s theoretically want to change all their red dice to black, but H9's contradict this. With intel officers you could probably get away without the accuracy generation. Consider Spinals instead to get that second front (and rear) arc red dice (which becomes black) to maximize chance of APT triggering.
  • GR-75 is a nice filler ship and all, but your other ships do not need the comms net. Maybe Jammers or Slicers instead.
  • Your list appears to want to last-first. But with zero bid and only 4 activations I can see this never happening. If playing for second player, you should invest in at least Admonition to help survive some shots if you park in a front arc.
  • I'd argue 2 A-wings instead of Corran Horn, or spend the points on ships like a second GR-75 for activation padding or defensive upgrades on the MC30's.

Regarding objectives, opening salvo might be useful for triggering APTs, except your opponent isn't going to choose it unless they have a decent swarm, in which case your are in trouble (no brace). Most wanted is always a strong alternative when you have a GR-75 to make your objective ship. Fire lanes is a poor pick due to your short range arcs and lack of strategic. Hyperspace assault may work instead. Superior positions is also a risk and you will leak points vs a bomber wing. Solar Corona will prevent those clutch accuracies.

Edit: As the list currently stands, another question to ask would be does Dodonna serve the list better? I can certainly see this as the framework for a Dodonna list; changes the squads around to include more bombers, then add BCC and you are done.

Well the CR-90 was originally a Pelta Assault ship, and I had points left over but not enough for say a Neb-B Salvation. I was looking at Dodonna's pride though, but there are too many ways of negating it and also there is no way to fish for the Crit reliably.

CAP is just there to be in range 1 of the opposing ships, Tycho being able to basically get to where he is needed most without much hassle.

The MC-30 build is there because I want to change my red's to a black and blue. Blue is there to guarantee an accuracy and ordnance experts are there to maximise the chances of getting a crit. Intel officer is there to work with H9's to make spending tokens harder and more costly, especially when it comes to close range where I can have 4 black and a blue, plus an extra dice for a Concentrate Fire Dial. The H9's comes in handy when I need to go Flotilla hunting as well.

Was looking at 2 generic A-Wings but will have to play test it. May end up dropping Corran for an initiative bid.

Sato does not have a lot of ships that he pairs well with and whilst I would like to have some MC-75 Ordnance ships in the list... I have not been able to find any for months.

Alternatively, do you have more MC30s? It would be nice to have a guinea pig for this.

You are paying 32 points to achieve this effect on the side arc only of 2 ships (plus a significant squadron investment). A single black dice with reroll at long range is too unreliable to trigger crit effects (44% chance only). And if you want guaranteed crits at close range, you'd save bulk points with the torpedo variant and a different commander.

For reference:

Number of black dice rolled (or re-rolled) -> Chance of rolling at least 1 black critical

  • 0 dice -> 0%
  • 1 dice -> 25%
  • 2 dice -> 44%
  • 3 dice -> 58%
  • 4 dice -> 68%
  • 5 dice -> 76%

Yeah I can but 4 maybe overkill... Maybe 3 is plenty?

I like this 4 MC30 Fleet idea. Looks like it would be fun..

Replace the CR90 with Salvation, I've run a Sato list and it's the only non-ordnance slot ship that really excels in it. Excellent choices on squadrons though, only without much escort protect Tycho at all costs he's your linchpin.

Yeah did that and agree it is much better. I have a 6pts initiative bid. Not sure exactly what missions work best with him either.

Most Wanted, Hyperspace Assault and Solar Corona maybe...

Not sure what to put on the Salvation. TRC's seem like a safe option. Not sure if there is something better I could put on though.

Well Hera can just activate Tycho if things look a bit tight. He is pretty hard to lock down anyways.

Hyperspace assault could work, have one of the MC30 as your set aside ship though, keep Salvation at long range as long as you can. Solar Corona is excellent since you're mostly foregoing accuracys. Most wanted is good, makes it into that slugfest you want it to be and anything that adds dice to your ships potentially is welcome and to your advantage.
